Autumn Term Short Course
What does it mean to be a hero? How do time and place shape notions of heroism?
The idea of the hero is among the most enduring and protean across antiquity and up to the present. This course will explore five different versions of the epic hero in Gilgamesh, Homer’s epics, Apollonius of Rhodes’ Jason and the Golden Fleece, Virgil’s Aeneid, and Ovid’s Metamorphoses. We will consider points of intersection and divergence among the five epics and consider what each communicates about concepts of heroism.
Each week, participants will receive a short, representative section of each epic to read, and we will discuss historical context, defining features, and key concepts.
Dates for this five-week course are 26th September, 3rd October, 10th October, 17th October and 24th October 2022.
Fees are £35. Tutor: Dr Eirene Allen.
