Grow Binghamton Crew 2018
This summer VINES had the pleasure of employing 20 local teens through our Grow Binghamton youth program to help us tend to our Binghamton Urban Farm! Check out our photo album (here) to see all of our adventures this summer.
Our diverse programming includes learning about a sustainable and just food system, tending to plants to grow our own food, team building exercises and job readiness training. Some days we just work on the urban farm tending to plants -- but we also see other forms of sustainable agriculture by visiting local farms and businesses. We play engage in meaningful conversations about identity and the connection of culture and food. And we prepare our youth for future positions of leadership, jobs, school and more by practicing communicating powerfully, writing a resume and working on interview skills.
We are incredibly proud to report that we had seven youth return from years prior, including four youth in leadership positions. Leaders in the program receive extra training to support building a team, leading exercises, facilitating workshops and being a support to new youth joining the program.
We are so proud of our youth that worked hard this summer to grow more than 5,000 pounds of produce for our community.
