Dear USET/USET SPF Family,
The Department of the Interior (DOI) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) have issued a Dear Tribal Leader Letter
announcing Listening Sessions on the June 29, 2022 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Oklahoma v. Castro-Huerta. These Listening Sessions will focus on the impact of the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold state concurrent criminal jurisdiction over non-Indian crimes against Indians in Indian country.
Details regarding these Listening Sessions are as follows—
Date/Time: Monday, September 26, 2022 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm ET
Date/Time: Tuesday, September 27, 2022 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm ET
Following the Supreme Court’s decision, USET SPF issued an Alert on July 6, 2022 expressing our disapproval of the regressive nature of this decision and its potential to affect the full exercise of Tribal Nation criminal and civil jurisdiction over non-Indians committing crimes against Indians on our lands. We are continuing to seek opportunities to address the Supreme Court’s decision in Oklahoma v. Castro-Huerta through legislative and regulatory processes.
If you are unable to pre-register for either of these Listening Sessions, please call 1(844) 845-4169 on September 26th or 27th and ask to be joined to the “U.S. DOJ Office of Tribal Justice call.” For more information on the Oklahoma v. Castro-Huerta decision, as well as Framing Questions for these Listening Sessions, please view the Dear Tribal Leader Letter. Written comments are due Friday, September 30, 2022 and can be submitted to OTJ@usdoj.gov. Questions should be directed to the DOJ Office of Tribal Justice at (202) 514-8812, or via email to OTJ@usdoj.gov.
