Dear USET/USET SPF Family,
As you may recall, in June 2022, the Department of the Interior (DOI) announced the appointment of the first-ever members to its Secretary’s Tribal Advisory Committee (STAC or Committee). The creation of the DOI STAC was announced during the 2021 White House Tribal Nations Summit to provide an avenue for Tribal Leaders to engage in routine and robust dialogue with Secretary Deb Haaland on important DOI programs and funding issues affecting Tribal Nations. The Committee’s membership is comprised of 24 Tribal Leaders—two for each of the 12 Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Regions.
As the Eastern Region's primary representative recently resigned, our region is currently being represented by Eastern Region Alternate, Poarch Band of Creek Indians Chairwoman, Stephanie Bryan.
With the next DOI STAC meeting slated to occur May 16-17, 2023. DOI is currently seeking agenda topic suggestions from its members. USET SPF is working to prepare a list of proposed topics from the Eastern Region and is seeking the input of our member Tribal Nations. If you have a suggested topic/priority issue for the upcoming DOI STAC meeting, please provide it via email to Liz Malerba, USET SPF Director of Policy and Legislative affairs no later than COB, Thursday, April 20, 2023.
For more information, please contact Liz Malerba, USET SPF Director of Policy and Legislative Affairs, at lmalerba@usetinc.org.
