Simply galumphing around

You are invited to the opening of Simply Galumphing Around an art installation by Teresa Grimaldi and Sarah Vardy. Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s epic nonsense poem, The Hunting of the Snark, which he began writing in Sandown and also the town’s history as a holiday destination filled with fun and hilarity. Weaving and layering old photographs, objects, illustrations, Teresa and Sarah have crafted a nonsense narrative featuring childhood memories, laughing competitions, galumphing, larking and wild abandon to illustrate our search and desire for happiness.

Saturday 29th February 6pm-8pm - be there, Leapsters!

“My mum Rose, was once landlady at the Sandown Tap and my dad, Peter, had an ice-cream parlour on the Battery, so I remember the 70’s as a child, the surge of visitors migrating to Sandown with suitcases and returning with memories. At some point, as in the poem, there’s been a vanishing and the town’s popularity has diminished joining the league of faded seaside towns but the magic, beauty and charm is still there. Simply Galumphing Around is more than nostalgia, it’s a call to build confidence, to be prepared to galumph and laugh so hard your jaw aches.” Teresa Grimaldi

What's been going on

Since closing down we have been doing a fair bit of work including installing ventilation, reconfiguring the store area, improving the lighting and we have even created a Bottle Shop featuring some impressive beers. If you like imperial stouts be sure to grab a can of Nightcap from Fourpure Brewery a 9% abv barrel-aged Irish coffee imperial stout that resulted from a collaboration with Jameson Irish whiskey.

We have also sourced a new range of sodas and alcohol-free soft drinks from Square Root, these include a Negroni spritz. The range contains no additives and as they say, it’s soda made by soda jerks. And yes that’s a good thing!

We have lots of people to thank for helping us get ready for our close up including Nick, Adam, Tony Trowbridge, Tom, Nikki, Mark, Lee, Mike, Neil, Kirsten and Lindsay! Thank you!

Beer adventures

Whilst work was being done, we decided to do some training and we are now proud owners of Foundation in Beer certificates from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling. Obviously whilst in London we tippled. We visited the Bermondsey Beer Mile, Mother Kelly's in Bethnal, Shoreditch Brewdog where we sampled an Omnipollo soft-serve Aon bourbon imperial stout topped with marshmallows! Omnipollo are avant-gardesters based in Stockholm but with creative tentacles spread throughout the beer world. Mother Kelly's had a magnificent selection of beers overseen by the knowledgeable Charlie Beety, a highlight was Winter on Mars from the Sheffield based brewery Saint Mars of The Desert a foeder-fermented ruby ale.

We look forward to seeing you all soon, it would be fab if you can make the exhibition opening on the Saturday 29th Feb at 6pm - we will have four beers on tap including Tiny Rebel's Dutty for all you juicy hopsters!
