Message from Fr. Mike for Sunday, Jan. 22 |
|
|
|
To the parishioners of St. Philip Neri Parish, sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints –
“Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ”.
Fr. Mike has been on the run ever since he returned from his trip to Ottawa on Thursday afternoon, so his weekly messages will resume NEXT weekend.
Fr. Mike did want you to know that the Freedom Fridays pot-luck suppers are continuing as usual, every Friday, beginning at 6 pm. Throw in a main dish, or a side dish, or some munchies, or a dessert, and yourself, and meet us in the Welcome Area for some great food, fun, and friendship! This is a wonderful, relaxing way to wind down the work week!
We can change the world, because “God is good … all the time”.
Wherever you go, go with God, Whenever you go, go make a difference.
St Philip Neri … pray for us
St. Eugene de Mazenod … pray for us
St. Kateri Tekakwitha … pray for us
Praise be Jesus Christ … and Mary Immaculate
Peace and blessings to you, and all your family.
Fr. Mike Dechant OMI
Something (Reminders) from the Parish:
A request from St. Philip Elementary School – they would like some knitters and readers! If you have some spare time to spend with our beloved students from St. Philip Elementary School, this is your opportunity to share your knitting skills with students during their lunch hour. Also, teachers are always excited to welcome “elders” into their class – to read to the students and to share some life-stories.
Monday, Jan. 23 – St. Philip Neri Parish will begin hosting the Alpha experience for young adults. We begin with supper, complements of Fr. Bill … watch the video … then talk about life! Please contact Fr. Mike at (306) 850-9075, for more information.

A Prayer for Ukraine
God of peace and justice, we pray for the people of Ukraine today. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow, that your spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war or peace, for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children at risk and in fear that you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus the Prince of Peace. Amen.

Parish Liturgical Ministries
Liturgical Ministries: There are just over one hundred people involved in liturgical ministries at the Parish and that does not include anyone who has signed up for outreach ministries. Presently, there are two Masses which include those ministers who we see, such as the Lectors, but there are also others who work “behind the scene”, for example, on kitchen laundry and altar linens. If you have any questions about the liturgical ministries, please contact Shirley at the Parish.
Sacrament of Baptism: The next dates for the celebration of Baptism are Sundays, January 29 and April 30. Pre-registration is necessary.
Sacrament of First Communion: Information about the preparation for children to celebrate their First Communion will be available within the next few weeks. There are no preparation classes in January. Those who have already completed their First Reconciliation will be contacted by email soon.
Funeral: Ron Thelander, a long time parishioner, has passed away and the Celebration of Life Mass was here on Friday, January 20. Please keep his wife, Marge, and their family and friends in your prayers. May Ron rest in peace at the eternal banquet of our Lord.
Children’s Liturgy: There is a need for a few small stackable “kindergarten” size chairs if anyone has some to donate to the Parish. Also, if anyone has any puppets of Jesus, Mary, Joseph, or the Apostles, and would like to donate them, those would be great for our sessions. Please contact Shirley for more information.

Diocesan Prayer Intention
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity January 18-25
O God of life, lead us to justice and peace, that suffering people may discover hope, the scarred world may find healing, and the divided churches may become visibly one, through the One who prayed for us – and in whom we are one Body – Your Son, Jesus Christ, who with You and the Holy Spirit, is worthy to be praised, one God, now and forever.

World Day of Consecrated Life
Thursday, February 2
On the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, when our universal Church marks the World Day of Consecrated Life, all are invited to celebrate and pray in solidarity with the consecrated women and men of our Diocese. On Thursday, Feb. 2, there will be Eucharistic Adoration at the Cathedral of the Holy Family at 11:15 am to pray for vocations in our Diocese, followed by Mass, celebrated, at 12:15 pm, with Bishop Mark Hagemoen presiding. Join in person at the Cathedral on February 2, or pray live or later via live-stream video at https://saskatoonmass.com or by clicking on the button below. After Mass, there will be a lunch and social – please RSVP to Sr. April Mireau, at (306) 531-9937 or aprilmireau@gmailcom, if you plan on attending the lunch. We thank God for the witness and service of consecrated men and women around the world and in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon!
Pope Saint John Paul II instituted this day of prayer for women and men in consecrated life in 1997. The Feast of the Presentation is also known as Candlemass Day - a day on which candles are traditionally blessed, symbolizing Christ who is the light of the world. So too, those in consecrated life are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ in our world.

SK Knights of Columbus Vocations Endowment
The Catholic Bishops of Saskatchewan have partnered with the Sask K of C Charitable Foundation to create the Sask K of C Vocations Endowment. Every year the earnings from this Endowment will be disbursed equally to each seminarian throughout all Saskatchewan dioceses and eparchy. These funds will help defray the estimated $30,000 per year it costs to educate each seminarian. During the month of February, local Knights of Columbus councils will participate with parishes in a fund-raising campaign in support of this Vocation Endowment fund. More detail on the campaign can be found on video by clicking on the button below.
Thank you for your support of the education and development of seminarians through prayer and financial assistance.

Bishop's Annual Appeal
Final Report
A message from the Diocese of Saskatoon Catholic Foundation:
“Thanks to all who are serving the community through support for the Bishop's Annual Appeal. Although 2022 has been a challenging year for many, with struggles for our faith community, we still listen to the needs of others. Stewardship is a lifestyle rooted in gratitude and generosity. By the end of June 2023, with all the reoccurring gifts accounted for, the total amount raised in this year’s Appeal will be $1,076,905. However, this does not include additional gifts we will continue collecting until June 2023. Across our Diocese, ten parishes achieved 100 per cent of their goal or above, including parishes at Macklin, Denzil, St. Donatus, Asquith, Foam Lake, Langham, Major, Naicam, St. Denis, St. Donatus, and Sts-Martyrs-Canadiens in Saskatoon. We are grateful to all who continue to Serve Others. When we align our thoughts and actions with God’s plan and use our gifts as God intended, our lives transform with joy, love, mercy and peace.”

“The Eucharist: Christ Our Sustainer”
Continues for two more Tuesdays
The Adult Faith Diocesan Awaken series – “The Eucharist: Christ Our Sustainer” will be held for two more Tuesday evenings, on Jan. 24 and 31,
from 7-8:30 pm, with Fr. Stefano Penna presenting at Holy Spirit Parish. There is also an online Zoom option. For more information, please call Astrid Alas at (306) 659-5858 or email amalas@rcdos.ca.
DESCRIPTION:
St. John Paul II once said: "This is the wonderful truth my dear friends: The Word, which became flesh 2,000 years ago, is present today in the Eucharist." But what happens when we don't feel the presence of Christ in the Eucharist? When we struggle with understanding the Sacrament of the Eucharist? When we ask ourselves why Catholics should return to Mass after the pandemic? Participants will come to a deeper understanding of why the Eucharist is, as Vatican II states: "The Source and Summit of the Christian Life." Through dynamic presentations and prayerful reflection, participants will learn the importance of the Eucharist for the life of the Church, and for our own lives.
