Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Huldah: Prophet of Wisdom"
Aim: Analyze the prophetess Huldah’s message from God for King Josiah, Reflect on King Josiah’s behavior after hearing the words from the book of the law, and Seek godly advice about our future.
Background: 2 Kings 22
Bible Lesson: 2 Kings 22:14-20
Memory Verses:
“ Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the LORD, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard [thee], saith the LORD.” 2 Kings 22:19 KJV
Some Highlights:
- After King Solomon’s reign, the United Kingdom of Israel divided into two kingdoms, Judah and Israel. Each kingdom had their respective kings. Today’s Bible Study focuses on Judah, the southern kingdom. Over the years, there were kings who followed God and those who did not. Josiah succeeded his father, Amon, who was a wicked king and led the practice of idoltry. After Amon’s death, Josiah rose to the throne at the tender age of 8 and ruled for 31 years. He did not walk in the footsteps of his father, instead he led a reform against idol worship and a return to the worship of God. His reign was highlighted with peace, prosperity, and political reform.
- During the eighteen year of King Josiah’s reign, money was being raised to repair the house of the Lord. Shaphan the scribe/secretary was sent by King Josiah to the house of the Lord to Hilkiah the high priest to ensure that the money raised was given to the renovation supervisors to pay the skilled workers (carpenters, masons, etc.) who were repairing the Temple. Hilkiah reported to Shaphan that during renovation work, he had found the Book of the Law.
- When Shaphan returned to King Josiah to report on his completed assignment, he confirmed his success and added that Hilkiah had given him a Book which he read to the King. When King Josiah heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his clothes as symbol of sorrow in how far the people had deviated from the Will of God as recorded in the Book of the Law. The King assembled a delegation comprised of Hilkiah the priest, Shaphan the scribe/secretary, and three others to inquire of the Lord for the people and for Judah concerning what was recorded in the Book of the Law. Their fathers had not obeyed the words of the Book and would be subject to consequences for their disobedience.
- Today’s lesson opens with this delegation consulting Huldah the prophetess as to the Word from the Lord regarding Judah’s disobedience to God’s Law as recorded in the book found in the Temple.
- Huldah told the delegation to report to King Josiah that the Lord said that He would bring disaster upon Jerusalem and its people according to all of the words written in the Book of the Law because they had forsaken Him and worshipped idol gods. Their actions had provoked God’s righteous anger and it would not be quenched.
- Huldah futher gave the delegation a message from God specifically for King Josiah. The message was that he would not witness God’s wrath upon Judah. Josiah would be allowed to die and be buried in peace, because he expressed true sorrow and regret and humbled himself before the Lord when he heard the reading of the Book of the Law. Josiah led the people in the renewal of Judah’s covenant with God and continued the destruction of the items associated with idol worship. He died in battle and was buried prior to God’s promised execution of judgement upon Judah.
Take Aways:
- God’s Law is true and must be obeyed.
- Corrective action is required when one learns of disobedience to God’s Law; however, there are consequences for disobedience to God’s Word.
- God is merciful and able to discern true contrition and humility when one is seeking forgiveness.
Bible Verses to Keep in Mind:
“But Samuel replied: "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.”
1 Samuel 15:22 NIV
“Your word [is] a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.” Psalms 119:105 NKJV
“All Scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 NKJV
“For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23 KJV
“For thou, Lord, [art] good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.” Psalms 86:5 KJV
“He hath shewed thee, O man, what [is] good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” Micah 6:8 KJV

Tennessee State University (TSU) and Meharry Medical College, two historically Black academic institutions in Nashville, today announced a new partnership focused on establishing a pipeline of African-American doctors and dentists who will provide essential care to underserved communities. The historic agreement will recruit, select and support the medical education of a cadre of African American students who are interested in becoming physicians or dentists. The overriding goal is to increase the number of African American trained health care providers who will stay and work in minority communities that have the greatest burden of health care needs. The accelerated program seeks to reduce the amount of time it takes students to enter medical school. The traditional four-year Bachelor of Science degree will become a three-year program—students will spend three years pre-med at TSU before going on to study medicine or dentistry at Meharry. The result is total completion in seven years, instead of the customary eight years. Students participating in the pathways program will be those with the highest academic preparation and quality. Requirements for admission will be based on a 3.5 grade point average, a score of 1300 on the SAT (two components) or a 29 on the ACT. Mentoring, tutoring and coaching will be crosscutting elements of the program, as will be career and professional guidance for all students involved. 644 New COVID-19 Cases & 25 Deaths Reported in Kentucky for
March 20, 2021
(34 New Cases in Fayette County)
Even with the availability of the long awaited COVID-19 vaccines, it is still important and necessary to continue to practice the CDC and Kentucky Governor's Guidance and Mandates. The distribution and administration of the vaccines to millions of people is a monumental task and will take time. Meanwhile we must stay steadfast, vigilant and disciplined in the adherence of safe practices as provided by the CDC and the Kentucky Governor's Health advice in light of the continued spread of the virus. Click CDC VACCINE INFORMATION for some information from the CDC on the COVID-19 vaccines.
- Get a flu vaccination as soon as possible but getting it any time in the flu season is beneficial. VaccineFinderexternal icon to find out where to get vaccinated near you.
- Avoid close contact with those who are sick, maintain at least 6 feet from others who are not from your household,
- Wear face masks when in public (Mandatory in Kentucky and is being extended on a 30 day basis until the spread is under control),
- Wash your hands frequently,
- Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and leave home only when absolutely necessary.
