CD now 40 years old
ABC radio 2BL said this morning, and i have not checked the exact date, that today is the 40th anniversary of the commercial audio CD.
Also said that the first commercially manufactured CD was by Abba but the release of this Abba CD ('The Visitors') did not happen for another year.
I remember when Philips (who partnered with Sony to set the standards) was being asked about CD audio quality vs. LP's, the spokesman said that the audio quality was set by a decision to have a product that could play an hour of music. Given the technology of the time, and so the maximum amount of data could be put onto a CD, this meant the music had to be sampled at only 16 bit samples at 44.1Kbps.
2BL's announcer joked that CD's were then advertised as Indestructible. Ha . . . Ha . . ..
