Soap Dough Designs
You may have noticed that I am playing with soap dough designs more lately. These are the soaps with images in them, like our Bear, Goat, Chickens, Dog, and Crocodile this month. I get a ton of questions about these designs, so I thought I'd try to answer them here.
- The design runs through the entire bar, back to front - these are not painted on, even as you use the soap the design will remain
- Soap dough is similar to modelling clay, and it is made from the same great soap recipe that we use in all our soap.
- Soap dough lathers and cleans just like soap, it IS soap! It's just crafted in a way to enable sculpting before it fully cures.
- Soap dough bars will last just as long as our regular bars, and they work exactly the same.
- Our soap dough bars are just slightly more expensive than our normal bars, and this is due to the multi-day process required to craft them. It is a weeks long process to get the design from concept to creation.
- Soap dough must be made just like our normal soap batter, then left to set up in such a way that it saponifies (goes through the process of becoming soap) but does not harden.
- Once the dough is ready for sculpting, which can take 3-7 days, then it needs to be shaped into the form required for the design. Once shaped, the forms are left to sit and firm up for 24-48 hours.
- Only after the dough is shaped and ready can the actual bar be crafted - which is our normal soap crafting process. And that includes making the batter, over processing it, cutting the bars, curing the bars, smoothing and beveling the bars, labeling and listing them here for you!
