Several people were called twice by God in the Bible, a pattern that often signaled a significant moment. Throughout the month of November we will meet some of them, starting this morning with Abraham and Jacob.
After 25 years of waiting for a child, Abraham and Sarah finally hold baby Isaac in their arms. He fills their home with such joy and laughter. But years later, God tests Abraham's faith by asking him to sacrifice the promised child. Although Abraham does not understand what God is doing, he obeys, and just as he has the knife posed in the air ready to kill his son, the angel of the Lord interrupts him.
“Abraham! Abraham!”
Genesis 22:11-13 tells us that Abraham has passed the test, proving that he fears God. The Lord provides a ram in the bush as a substitute sacrifice for Isaac.
There was also a significant instance when Jacob’s name was called twice!
Jacob just found out that his favorite son Joseph isn’t dead—in fact, he’s second in command in the Egyptian empire. Jacob is old, and wants to see Joseph before he dies, so he prepares for the journey to Egypt. He packs up his family and begins the trip. On the way, he has a vision.
“Jacob, Jacob.”
Genesis 46:1-4 teaches us that The Lord tells Jacob not to be afraid. He will see Joseph, and his descendants will become a great nation in the foreign land.
To God Be The Glory for Abraham and Jacob! God called out to Abraham to stop him from sacrificing Isaac and to show him the ram to be offered instead. And God called to Jacob in a vision, reassuring him not to fear going to Egypt to see Joseph.
