1. Risk assessment in moving and handling

I promised more about how to help someone who can't move independently from one place to another.

Safe manual handling is, as I mentioned last week, a subject of perennial interest, on which I have had a number of requests for more information.

So to begin with, details about risk assessment – as important for family carers as for care businesses...

2. New Department of Health and Social Care

One of the changes wrought by Theresa May's challenging cabinet reshuffle is a newly-named Department of Health and Social Care.

Jeremy Hunt, Health Secretary since 2012, reportedly refused to move, and now has a more explicit responsibility for social care, as well as the NHS.

A welcome move towards better integration? I would love to know what you think!

3. CASCAIDr open for business

As we watch the NHS staggering under the weight of its own success at keeping more of us alive for longer than ever, serious cuts to local authorities' budgets for social care have played their part in contributing to the current crisis.

Perhaps the perfect time, then, for legal advice charity CASCAIDr finally to open its doors for business. When I interviewed founder Belinda Schwehr last year, one of the questions I asked was whether she was worried that she might break social care altogether, by enabling more people to get the support they are entitled to.

Listen to the interview and find her answer, here

4. Power of Attorney by regions

If you are wondering what other people find interesting on Independent Living, I can certainly tell you the story that caught most attention last week.

It was the piece about setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney. But it wasn't complete. The rules are actually quite different, depending where you live – so I have now updated our coverage with information that is relevant to people in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

5. Derek's View – Luxurious care at Kings Lodge

Kings Lodge is a state-of-the-art facility which is styled on a European ski-lodge and set in 15 acres of mature woodland.

This innovative building is championing a new concept in luxurious, person-centred care, with 64 beds for residents requiring a high level of care.

Gainsborough Baths supplied specialist bathing facilities, in addition to the ensuite wet room provided with each bedroom.

Bathing is very much appreciated by residents – you can find out more here

6. Latest updates - Warm Homes Fund

As the weather seems to be turning chillier, some news about the Warm Homes Fund, established by National Grid to help tackle fuel poverty in both rural and urban areas.

More than 9000 homes are set to benefit from the first round of payments, and bids are currently invited from local authorities and social housing providers for round two.
