Reducing knife crime in Swindon
Last Saturday (20 November), our Trading Standards team joined forces with the police to carry out a knife purchasing operation in Swindon.
Wiltshire Police Cadets, aged between 15 and 16, went into shops in the town with the aim of trying to buy a knife.
Unfortunately, eight out of 15 national retailers that were visited failed the test purchase. Our Trading Standards team will be reporting these national chains to their Primary Authority Trading Standards services for further investigation.
As well as targeting the national chains, our under-age purchasers also visited four independent shops, with three of those retailers refusing to sell the knife.
Swindon Trading Standards will be reviewing the one local retailer that did fail the test purchase, to check its underage sales policy and systems. The local retailer will be offered support and advice to ensure they are compliant in the future.
