Hackers Hide Cyberattacks in Social Media Posts

Corporations and government agencies around the world are training their staff to think twice before opening anything sent by email, but hackers have already moved on to a new kind of attack, targeting social media accounts, where people are more likely to be trusting. State-backed hackers are using social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook to break into Defense Department computer networks. And the human error that causes people to click on a link sent to them in an email is exponentially greater on social media sites, because people are more likely consider themselves among friends. Once one person is compromised, attacks can move quickly through that person’s friend network, leading to a nightmare situation in which entire departments could be targeted. And while the problem is known, training about how to spot an attack that comes through Twitter and Facebook remains limited!

Why Is Cybersecurity So Hard?

After nearly 20 years of trying and billions of dollars in investment, why are organizations are still struggling with cybersecurity? In fact, the problem seems to be getting worse, not better. Answering this question requires moving beyond a purely technical examination of cybersecurity. It’s true that the technical challenges are very real; we don’t know how to write bug-free code, for example. But if you look at the challenge more broadly, even if we resolved the technical issues, cybersecurity would remain a hard problem for three reasons:

  • It’s not just a technical problem
  • The rules of cyberspace are different from the physical world’s
  • Cybersecurity law, policy, and practice are not yet fully developed

Secure Your Data, Not Just the Perimeter

Last year, hackers shifted their focus from targeting financial institutions to infiltrating the large databases of social media and entertainment sites, according to a new study. Hackers also used encryption for 4 percent of breaches to render that data unreadable and then demanded ransom from those organizations and their customers. Because of this transition, the Gemalto report, "2016 Mining for Database Gold," recommends a "new mindset," in which companies focus more on the protection of the data itself than on securing the perimeter. The report recommends encrypting all sensitive data, securely storing and managing all encryption keys, and controlling access and authentication of users.
