Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Traumatic events, such as fire, earthquake, bombing, and hurricane, occur daily. Such devastating circumstances often cause an acute reaction of fear and terror for individuals who experience them.

War, rape, and physical assault or abuse, whether of a child or an adult, produce equally frightening results, known as post-traumatic stress. It occurs when traumatized individuals cannot safely assign to the past what has happened in their life. The experience of trauma undermines one’s expectations of safety and security in the world. Traumatized individuals continue to be aware of what others know to be true but tend to keep hidden from their consciousness: That life is fragile and can be gone or forever changed in an instant, and that our expectation of control in the world is often an illusion.

As they struggle to make sense of what has happened to them the majority of individuals who experience severe trauma develop such acute, short-term symptoms as sleep disturbances and physical pain.

Others, unfortunately, develop chronic symptoms related to their experience of trauma. These symptoms, when they occur together, are indicative of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. The impact of such symptoms has a neurobiological basis and crosses physical, emotional, and spiritual boundaries. Such clients present significant challenges to the massage therapist’s skills and knowledge in the treatment room.

This article examines the signs and symptoms of chronic PTSD and the role of the massage therapist in dealing with them. The overall goal in the massage treatment of PTSD is to help the client to become safely “embodied within the self.”

Relaxation Tips for Stress Relief

We may associate relaxation with "wasting time," but in fact, regular relaxation and stress management are important for physical and emotional health. This is because your body’s stress response can get triggered often throughout the day and, if your body doesn’t return to its regular state of relaxation afterward, you may find yourself in a state of chronic stress.

Chronic stress is the type of stress that can really wreak havoc on your health and contribute to a host of stress-related health problems including heart disease, high blood pressure, and many more, including the common cold.

Learning relaxation techniques can help you restore your body to its natural state when you’re feeling stressed, and can potentially help you remain more resilient  to stress that you face in the future – you can become less reactive to the stressors that you face and can recover more quickly from it if you do react.

Relaxation can occur when you’re just sitting and watching t.v. in a lounge chair (which is what some people think of when they think of the word ‘relaxation’), but having a more structured plan for relaxation can be more helpful in the face of stress. It helps to have a plan because you can learn to use strategies that are most effective, not just familiar. You can also actively choose strategies that build resilience rather than merely distracting you from what's creating stress for you on a given day. Learning to relax your body and your mind can be more effective than either one on its own, obviously.

Here are some of the best relaxation strategies you can use to combat stress.

Recipe of the Month

Roasted Tomato, Garlic, Onion & Coconut Soup

Snow is falling outside as I type this recipe !!  There is nothing better than a bowl of hot soup on a cold day.  This tomato soup is anything but traditional, boring, or bland. The light coconut milk is a great way to add a luxurious creaminess, pairing well with the heat from the garam masala and adding a nice contrast to the rustic quality of the roasted vegetables. Enjoy !

Roasting vegetables:

  • 5 pounds of roma tomatoes, washed & sliced in half
  • 1 large sweet onion, peeled & sliced
  • 2-3 large garlic bulbs, prepared for roasting
  • extra virgin olive oil, kosher salt, & pepper, for vegetables

  • 3 cups roasted tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp roasted garlic flesh
  • all of the roasted sweet onion
  • 1 can light coconut milk (reserve 2-3 tbsp for garnish)
  • 3 cups vegetable broth (I used low-sodium)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tsp garam masala (add slowly, to taste)
  • 1 tsp salt or to taste (you may have to reduce amt. if you used full-sodium broth)
  • 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • for garnish: garlic croutons, coconut milk, pesto, herbs, garam masala, pepper, etc.

1. Preheat oven to 375F and line 2 baking sheets with tin foil (note that parchment paper will burn). Grab a small casserole dish to place the garlic in. For how to prepare the garlic, see this tutorial. Lightly drizzle on EVOO onto onions and season onions and tomatoes with S & P. Roast for about 30 minutes and then check on the vegetables. You might have to remove the onions early as they cook the quickest. When the onions are golden and lightly blackened on the edge, you can remove them. Continue roasting the garlic for about 60 minutes or so (check it after 45 mins), and the tomatoes for about 1 hour and 20 mins. Your oven times will vary though, so keep an eye on them!

2. Add 3 cups roasted tomatoes, 2 tbsp roasted garlic flesh, and all the onion into a large pot. Add coconut milk, tomato paste, and broth and stir well.

3. Stir in the seasonings and spices to taste. Bring to a boil and then simmer for about 5-10 minutes.

4. Carefully transfer into a blender, processor, or use an immersion blender. Pulse for just a few seconds until chunky. You can also make it smooth, but I liked the texture. Serve immediately and garnish with reserved coconut milk, a sprinkle of garam masala, croutons/bread, and fresh black pepper.
