Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Lest
We Forget”
Aim: Understand
what
humility is in the light of God’s commandments;
Appreciate
God’s
blessings and our need for humility and Practice
living a life of humility.
Background:
Deuteronomy 8
Bible Lesson:
Deuteronomy
8:1-11
“Beware
that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his
commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command
thee this day:” Deuteronomy
8:11
KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
Our Study comes from the Old
Testament Book of Deuteronomy which is the fifth of the Bible
books classified as the
Books of the Law. Its authorship is attributed to Moses under the
inspiration of God. His successor Joshua is believed to have
contributed the information regarding Moses’ death. Deuteronomy is
a partial restatement and additional explanation of the
Law given
by
God to Moses. Its timing is 40 years after the exodus from Egypt and
when the first
generation of Israelite exiles
had died in the wilderness because of their
rebelliousness and
disobedience. Moses stands before a new generation of Israelites,
who had limited remembrance of the wilderness experience. The
Israelites are at the verge
of entering Canaan, the Promised Land. Moses’ last words are
recorded in Deuteronomy. Moses
is not permitted by God to enter the Promised Land with the
Israelites; however,
he
allowed to look over into Canaan from a mountain vantage point.
Moses warns the Israelites against disobeying God and encourages
them to follow the path of
truth. The focus of
Deuteronomy chapter 8 is
to remind readers to
remember the Lord and all
His Goodness.
-
Deuteronomy
8:1-2, Promise Kept: Moses
admonishes the Israelites to carefully obey all of God’s
commandments. Their obedience will allow them to enter and to occupy
the land promised by God to their ancestors (Abraham,
Isaac, and Jacob) and to
live abundantly and to multiply. He reminds them how the Lord God
had led the Israelites through the wilderness for 40 years. God had
humbled them and tested
them to reveal their willingness to adhere to His commandments.
-
Deuteronomy
8:3-6, A Memory of Provision:
The Israelites were humbled with hunger in the wilderness. God fed
them bread from heaven, manna, a food unknown to them and their
ancestors. They were to learn that they did
not live from bread alone, but from every word that
comes from the mouth of the Lord God, for He was the
source of all sustenance
required for
life.
When Jesus was tempted by
Satan in the wilderness, He quoted this reference (Luke
4:4) to man living not by
bread alone, but by every word from the mouth of God. The
Israelites were humbled in that they were totally dependent upon the
Lord their God for their survival in the wilderness. They had no
other help for their needs. For
40 years, God faithfully
prevented
their clothes from wearing out and not allowing their feet to
blister or to swell as they wandered in the wilderness. If
God cares about His children’s clothing, how much more is He able
to be trusted with the care of our souls. Their
hardships experienced in
the wilderness came from
God as discipline for rebellion and disobedience. Discipline
has a teaching as well as a correction component for the recipient.
They were reminded that a
parent disciplines their children for their own good to train them
in the way that they
should go. Therefore, they were to obey the commandments of the Lord
their God and walk in His ways and have proper reverence of God.
-
Deuteronomy
8:7-11, Place of Plenty: Moses
assures the Israelites that God is bringing them into a
lush, productive land with
flowing streams, pools of water, fountains, and springs that gush
out in the valleys and hills. This was a fertile land with wheat and
barley, grapevines, fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil, and honey.
Food was plentiful and there was nothing lacking. The land even had
iron as common as stones
and copper in abundance in the hills. In other words, it
was quite a contrast to the
wilderness that had been barren and so harsh for existence that
without the miraculous acts
of the Lord their God they
would have perished.
Moses cautioned
the Israelites that when they
were full and satisfied
that they must praise
God and express appreciation for the good land that God had given
them. Furthermore, they must not forget the Lord their God and
disobey His commandments, regulations, and decrees that God had
directed Moses to give them this day as
they prepared to
enter the Promised Land, Canaan.
Take
Aways:
-
When
we survey God’s many blessings and His goodness and mercy, our
only response can be humble praise and appreciation to God for all
His benefits.
-
Especially
in good times, we
must
not
forget our God who is
the
source of all good and perfect gifts
-
We
must never take for granted or believe that our successes are from
our own efforts, for God is the ultimate source and reason for any
success that we experience and He deserves the glory!
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Every
good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from
the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of
turning.” James 1:17 NKJV
“I
will praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify Him with
thanksgiving.” Psalm 69:30 NKJV
“Your
word [is] a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.” Psalms 119:105
NKJV
“So
Samuel said: "Has the LORD [as great] delight in burnt offerings
and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey
is better than sacrifice, [And] to heed than the fat of rams.” 1
Samuel 15:22 NKJV
“And
whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall
humble himself shall be exalted.” Matthew 23:12 KJV
“Whosoever
therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is
greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:4 KJV
“A
man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble
in spirit.” Proverbs 29:23 KJV
“Pride
[goes] before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.”
Proverbs 16:18 NKJV
