Letter from the Editor
From the Editor,
It has been a wonderful year working for the School of Business Marketing Department as their Student Communication Specialist. As they say, "All good things must come to an end". I will be closing this chapter, not only as the Editor of Marketing Today, but a UConn student as I prepare to graduate this December. This is a bittersweet moment for myself, and so for my final spotlight article I will reflect on my time as an undergraduate at UConn and share
I came to UConn in the fall of 2017 from one of the smallest public high schools in Connecticut. I spent my freshman year unsure of what I wanted to do professionally and focused more on building a social life. As a Communication major, I was exposed to a wide variety of disciplines and after a year or so I found myself wanting to pursue a career that allowed me to write and be creative. My sophomore and junior years were spent finding an on-campus job and exploring remote internships that helped me gain experience in marketing and public relations, reinforcing my want to work at an agency or large media company.
Like many others graduating this year, the pandemic drastically affected both my academic and professional life, but it really helped to put things into perspective. I chose to spend the 2020-2021 academic year as a part-time student and built up my savings working. It was without a doubt the best decision I've ever made and I'm so thankful for all the experiences this extra year has given me.
This newsletter is all about presenting you with professional and academic resources which is without a doubt important, but I also want to stress the importance of seeking fulfillment outside of your career and academic aspirations. I've spent as much time as anyone worrying about locking down the next job or internship but if the past two years have taught me anything it is that you have more time than it feels like you do.
For everyone returning for another year at UConn, I encourage you to join clubs, reach out and make new friends, go to campus events, and enjoy the freedom college grants you while you still have it. That dream job will be waiting for you when you're ready, and you shouldn't feel behind if you haven't had some kind of breakthrough yet. All it takes is that one offer, and in the meantime enjoy your four (or five) years here, it goes by fast.
Thank you all for reading Marketing Today, and good luck as you finish the semester. I wanted to extend a special congratulations to Riley Fallon, who will be taking over as the new Student Communications Specialist this Fall!
