Hello from gorgeous cow country in upstate NY!

oops... I mean, hello from rainy coffee country in Portland!

I'm currently sitting in a lovely cafe thinking about my family and missing them very much. And, in the meantime...

The world seems to be going to hell in a hand-basket around us, doesn't it? Not just the coronavirus outbreak. For some strange reason, my attention has been directed to all kinds of stories involving the dark side of our modern globalist and hyper-connected life. There was the scary story of the dystopian lake filled by the world's tech lust, for one.

Then there was the suggestion that the new phenomenon of the "internet of things" will basically reduce us to medieval peasant status, except without the protection of a feudal liege lord (I'm telling you, it's time to learn how to ride a horse and wield a sword again!)

I could fill a list a mile long with such stories. And some people do seem to prefer to dwell on the negative. But I'd prefer to look at the positive and to consider what can be done. There was a great photo-filled post about a young Russian fashion designer who uses modern technology to design clothing inspired by classic Russian folkloric designs and fairy tales. As with all of modern fashion, it's a bit wonky for my tastes, but there are some really beautiful things here.

Finally, as we are being encouraged more and more to stay at home, I have a humble suggestion to make. Why not take this time to write down our own stories? Not necessarily for publication, but even for ourselves and our family? I mean, what better way of processing the craziness around us than to sit down and try to write down what you think and feel? but how can I do this, you may ask? Well, here's one way of starting: copy the classics. Yeah, really :)

If you'd like help with your stories, just reach out! I'd be happy to help.

And just to encourage you all, I'd like to share a little gift with you all. Book 5 is coming along nicely, and I recently shared an exclusive early sneak peak with my Patreon patrons.

Here it is for your viewing and listening pleasure: me reading an exclusive chapter from The Throne of the Gods!

Hope you have a happy and healthy end of winter, everyone.

And thank you for coming along with me on my writerly adventures!

~Nicky
