Free birthday bus travel comes to the West!
August marks the beginning of the the West of England's birthday bus scheme, with passengers already starting to enjoy free bus journeys.
The innovative initiative, giving every resident in the West of England free bus travel throughout the month of their birthday, runs for 12 months, until every West of England resident has had the chance to benefit from 'Birthday Buses'. It is valid on buses across 350-plus square miles, for as many bus journeys as you want, at any time.
Mayor Dan Norris said: "I'm really proud of Birthday Buses. It's new and innovative and is all about behaviour change - about getting more and more people out of their cars and onto the buses long term. That's vital to build the local transport system West of England residents deserve, which in turn will cut congestion and help us meet our ambitious net-zero targets locally. And it will really help locals during this really. really difficult cost-of-living crisis."

No-Churn Ice Cream
Thinking of investing in an ice cream maker? Don't! Buy a can of condensed milk instead...
Condensed milk is the magic ingredient when it comes to making ice cream at home; despite the fact that you're skipping the churning process altogether, the end result will be creamy, smooth and totally, utterly addictive.
The recipe below is for a delectable peach ice cream, as ripe peaches are in abundance in the UK right now. But you can, of course, go your own way: substitute the peaches with plums, nectarines, strawberries or raspberries. Omit the fruit and the honey entirely to create a classic vanilla ice cream, add peppermint extract instead of vanilla/honey for a minty blast, and/or experiment with indulgent chocolate/biscuits combinations – replace the meringue with crushed Maltesers, crumbled chocolate chip cookies or smashed-up Biscoffs for a totally treatsome, chilled-out end result.
Ingredients (makes around 10 portions)
4-5 average-sized peaches (you want around 500g of fruit in total), de-stoned and chopped into chunks 50g runny honey The finely grated zest of 1 orange ½ tsp vanilla bean paste (or 1 tsp vanilla extract) 500ml double cream 200ml condensed milk 50g meringue nests, crumbled into chunks
Method
Put the chopped peaches into a medium-sized saucepan over a medium heat. Add the honey, orange zest, vanilla and a splash of water and gently poach for around 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the peaches have softened. Allow to cool slightly before tipping the mixture into the bowl of a food processor or large blender and process until smooth. Tip the fruit purée into a large bowl and set to one side to cool completely.
Add the cream and condensed milk to the cool purée and whisk until the mixture has thickened to the texture of clotted cream. Gently fold most of the crumbled meringue through the mixture, then transfer the lot into a 2.5 litre, freezer-proof container. Sprinkle the reserved meringue over the top and freeze for around 6 hours, until solid. Remove from the freezer around 10 minutes before serving.
The ice cream will happily live in your freezer for around 2 months.

WEEKEND WINES | ON THE WEST COAST

Californian reds
California is arguably the USA's most celebrated winemaking region, and it's easy to see why. The mix of abundant sunshine and cool coastal air makes for a hugely diverse range of wines. The reds we've put together here are largely characterised by their deep, fruity, all-American flavours.
The rain rages on in the South-West, and a good glass of red wine always takes the edge off a cold, wet evening. So, as we stay trapped inside, take a look at our picks for some sweet, summery, but satisfying Californian tipples.
Juggernaut Russian River Pinot Noir - Bogle Family Vineyards This is Pinot in an irresistibly easygoing Californian accent, yet with defined aromas and flavours of red cherries with hints of fragrant wood, cherry leaf and toasted coconut. With juicy fruit, gentle acidity and soft tannin, it's effortlessly enjoyable | £26.50
Zinfandel - Bonterra Aromas of black raspberry and cherry fruit, and notions of pepper and minerals on the nose. A decadent palate of briery fruit, vanilla, brown spice and toasty oak is framed by polished tannins and a rich, lingering finish | £16.65
Proprietary Red - Angels and Cowboys A rich, juicy Californian red, all dark cherry, raspberry and fig, with a cascade of melted dark chocolate and a powder of spice | £29.50
Cabernet Sauvignon - Cannonball This classic revival has the best characteristics of traditional California and old world Bordeaux. Featuring aromatic tiers of ripe mulberry, spiced black tea and purple floral notes, it has tremendous depth, leading to a long and unstinting finish | £22
Abstract - Orin Swift This wine is bursting with juicy red and dark fruits. On the palate, the wine is voluptuous in body yet incredibly smooth with similar fruit notes and a touch of sweet vanilla, and finishes with lingering notes of ripe black plum | £37.50
