Innovative Tools Available to Faculty to Make Proposal Process Efficient

During this time working remotely, DER wants to highlight some valuable tools that can benefit faculty during the proposal (budget) development process.

KC Summary Budget Tool (made accessible for PI & editable by PI)

In the KC system, your DER Research Administrator is able to create a working draft budget which can be accessed and edited by the project PI. With access to the KC system, and using the summary tab, faculty can log into Kuali Coeus to make several adjustments to the draft budget to determine the best scenario for their project. They can shuffle dollars to help drill down or up to a target dollar goal. This tool enables faculty to utilize the system in place of spreadsheets. If you are interested, be sure to request this access from your Research Administrator.

KC Budget Development Using Screen Sharing

DER Research Administrators have many tools to help streamline service and make the proposal development process as efficient as possible. One tool to help make the budget development process efficient is screen sharing during scheduled one-on-one budget development sessions. This resource can be made available to the project PI to help identify costs associated in that draft budget and to help answer budget related questions throughout the budget development process. Viewing the budget development (live) with the Research Administrator may also help to reduce the number of draft budget scenarios. Feel free to ask for this resource when communicating with your Research Administrator.

Peng Zhang receives 2020 Young Investigator Program Award

Peng Zhang will advance research on high-power microwaves with a $510,000 Young Investigator Program Award from the U.S. Office of Naval Research. It’s the second Dept. of Defense YIP Award for this assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering since 2018.

Communication on Changes to the Scope of Work or Timeline for the Project

OSP is beginning to receive guidance from external funding sponsors on communicating COVID-19 impacts to projects’ scopes of work. If you are asked by faculty, or are aware of significant impacts to externally funded sponsored projects, we have documented guidance for you to share. Please note, specific requests/directions from sponsors take precedence over the information outlined here.

MSU Human Research Restrictions and Extension of the Stay Home, Stay Safe Executive Order

On April 9, 2020, Governor Whitmer issued Executive Order No. 2020-42, extending her prior “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order through April 30, 2020 at 11:59pm. Please note that the restrictions identified in the email below for MSU human research conducted in Michigan are now also extended through April 30, 2020 at 11:59pm. Read the full message here.

Community-Engaged Research and Partnership Forum

University Outreach and Engagement is hosting this forum for faculty, academic staff, post-docs, and graduate students to discuss how the pandemic is affecting our community-engaged research and to share resources that may be helpful in moving this work forward in ethical and appropriate ways. Forum ideas will be shared with participants and used to inform University Outreach and Engagement's summer series on community engagement and COVID-19.

New resources for Conflict of Interest and other Disclosures (FAQ and Faculty Disclosure Matrix)

OSP has developed new resources to support conflict of interest and other disclosures. The resources include COI FAQs and a listing of disclosures, descriptions, resources and contacts that can be helpful as we reconcile Federal and State requirements and address increasing expectations from Federal agencies.

New NIH Resource to Analyze COVID-19 Literature: The COVID-19 Portfolio Tool

In the past few months, the scientific community has ramped up research in response to the SARS‑CoV‑2 pandemic; dozens of peer-reviewed articles and preprints on this topic are being added to the literature every day. This rapidly expanding effort has created a need for a human-curated resource to explore and analyze advances in SARS‑CoV‑2 COVID-19 research as they accumulate in real time. To address this need, the NIH Office of Portfolio Analysis (OPA) has assembled a comprehensive portfolio of COVID‑19 publications and preprints that is freely available to the public. The COVID-19 portfolio is updated daily with new literature selected for inclusion by subject matter experts.

COVID-19 Funding and Funding Opportunities

NIH is devoting significant resources to COVID-19. In addition to dedicating regularly appropriated funds, to date NIH has received emergency funding for COVID-19-related activities in two supplemental bills. To get funding as quickly as possible to the research community, NIH is using Urgent and Emergency competing revisions and administrative supplements to existing grant awards.

Upcoming disruption to NIH's electronic systems and Grants.gov

The disruption to the National Institutes of Health’s electronic systems will be from 8 am ET on Friday, April 17 to 8 pm ET on Monday, April 20. During this time you will not be able to access eRA Commons, ASSIST and all other eRA modules and informational websites. You will, however, be able to work on NIH proposals in KC. Grants.gov will also be down for scheduled maintenance between 5am and 10am on Saturday, April 18th. You will not be able to pull Grants.gov opportunities into KC during this time. Please plan ahead to avoid these system disruptions. If you have any questions please contact your OSP Proposal Team contact.

Working From Home With Help!

To brighten everyone's week, DER is going to feature staff working from home with their furry friends who assist them! This week meet Tyler's cats. While he does not have any pets of his own, Tyler will feed these wild cats that occasionally come by. His favorite is Limpy (she limps) and he got to pet her once (and washed his hands like crazy afterwards).

If you would like to nominate a faculty member and their pets (or yourself!), email hansleyc@msu.edu
