The Holburne to unveil a £2-million space showcasing over 100 Renaissance treasures from the renowned Schroder Collection next week
The new Schroder Gallery, on the lower ground floor of the Holburne Museum, opens to the public on 10 September and takes inspiration from the great treasury displays of the past.
The gallery will present one of the finest private collections of Renaissance silverware, paintings, bronzes, maiolica and gems from the Schroder family collection.
The display of over 100 pieces of silver will include masterpieces such as The Schwarzenberg Nef (a large silver ship); a rare Mechanical Celestial Globe, and The Aldobrandini Tazza (one of a set of 12 dishes once described as ‘one of the most spectacular groups of 16th century silver’).
The display will also include a number of works in bronze, masterpieces of 16th century Italian maiolica, and important paintings from the first half of the 16th century, including works by artists such as Lucas Cranach the Elder and Hans Holbein the Elder.
Entrance to the gallery will be included in General Admission tickets – whilst Friends of The Holburne Museum members will go free.

1413Magazine
Founded in 1982, primarily as a jazz and new music magazine, The Wire has been the go-to journal for anyone interested in a wide range of global alternative, underground and experimental sounds. Not always an easy sell or listen for many, but The Wire travelled through the high times of music print journalism before being purchased in a worker's buy-out by a small group staff at the turn of the century when things began to get tougher for the industry. But it’s very much still going, and this week celebrates the release of its 500th issue, an extraordinary achievement. It’s an extraordinary issue too, wrapped in a cover configured as a special commemorative silver gatefold with artwork by Savage Pencil.

A collaborative exhibition of works by Laura Bridges, Mary Caron-Courtney, and Julia McDonald, The Indigo Creatives. These artists have a shared passion for exploring creativity through surface texture, pattern, mark-making, and the interplay of colour across different materials and techniques. In this exhibition, the thread that weaves their individual practices together is the colour Blue.
Each artist is drawn to blue for different reasons, whether it’s the deep Prussian tones of a cyanotype or the serene azure of an ocean horizon.

Bath Rugby v Glasgow Warriors. 6 September - KO 3pm. The Rec
Johann van Graan has named his Bath Rugby squad to play Glasgow Warriors at The Rec on Saturday, kick-off 15:00, as they begin their 2025/26 pre-season schedule.
Van Graan has selected a team which blends both youth and experience with two new additions set to get their first runouts in the famous colours of the Blue, Black and White. Ewan Richards captains the side from the back row, alongside fellow flanker Thompson Cowan and Arthur Green at Number 8. The front row features hooker Jasper Spandler in between props Scott Kirk and Kieran Verden, who penned a new contract with Bath over the summer. Locks Will Jeanes and Harvey Cuckson make up the engine room to complete the pack. Scrum-half Bernard van der Linde, who joined Bath from South African side Vodacom Bulls at the start of the 2025/26 season, starts alongside fly-half Ciaran Donoghue. In the centre, Will Butt wears number 12 with Chris Harris, another new addition to the Bath squad for this season, joining him at 13. The wing positions will be occupied by Charlie Griffin coming into the side at 11 with Austin Emens operating on the opposite channel. Sam Winters, who put pen to paper on a Senior Academy contract with Bath over the summer, will complete the starting XV at full back.
A number of replacements have been named for this fixture, providing the opportunity for a host of players across the squad to gain valuable minutes in this first warm-up game of 2025/26.

A rare luxury wide beam narrowboat named Lady ‘M’ of Bath
Houseboat | Guide Price: £125,000
Originally designed as an up market restaurant boat located at Hampton Court on the River Thames, Lady ‘M’ has recently been cruising the waters around Bath as a hospitality / live aboard wide beam barge offered exclusively to guests of the award winning Lady Margaret’s Holiday home in central bath.
Perfect for entertaining friends or exploring the delights of the local river and canal, Lady ‘M’ has recently undergone extensive renovations and is now offered for sale as either an exclusive hospitality business, or a stylish live aboard – or as the current users have done, both!
As Alex Timms the owner of the beautiful wide beam explains: “My wife and I have been offering stylish trips to our holiday guests in much the same way that the Royal Crescent Hotel offered trips aboard their gentlemen’s river launch the Lady Sophina before the turn of the century - although Lady ‘M’ has never been offered to members of the general public."
He continues, "in
between cruises my wife Kate and I have been enjoying the delights of living
aboard in such a beautiful space and have travelled as far west as Bristol
where we have a choice of mooring opposite the ss Great Britain or next to the
Arnolfini – or back up to the Thames and the delights of places like Henley,
Oxford and the best of Wiltshire and the Cotswolds via the Kennet & Avon
Canal.
Satisfaction levels amongst
our holiday let guests have been at an all time high and our holiday let currently has the best ratings on the whole of Booking.com, with an unprecedented 10
out of 10 across every criteria for the last year – the best not just in Bath
nor the UK but worldwide. Passengers are over-awed with the experience of
sitting in the front area with our local scenery gliding by – or simply moored
up next to a heron with a kingfisher flying past.
Living aboard Lady ‘M’ has
been a joy – especially immersed in nature whilst drifiting serenely along both
river and canal. She is available for continuous cruising and as well as the
recent renovations has recently had her hull blacked and her engine serviced.”
Barge living is seen as an increasingly good value alternative to bricks and mortar. The asking price for Lady ‘M’ is £125,000 – which is less than half the price of a local flat and the only fixed costs are a continuous cruising licence via the Canal & River Trust plus our annual insurance which combined work out at total of less than £2,000 per annum. Although ideal for a couple or a single person Lady ‘M’ can sleep up to 4 in two berths and can be viewed on the boating website by googiing Lady ‘M’ Inspection launch at narrowboats.apolloduck.co.uk
