Tim Ohrt Park playground: A committee came together to develop a plan for improvements at Tim Ohrt Park. Unlike Centennial and Johns-Bohn parks, Tim Ohrt has not been updated with modern, safe, and accessible playground equipment. Committee leaders Anita Oddo and Sheri Crawford presented a plan for new equipment and for raising the required funding mostly from community members. The mayor and Council agreed to contribute $10,000 in Keno proceeds toward the project. Expect to see opportunities to contribute to the project during Bennington Daze.
156th Street update: This project continues apace, with work beginning north of the Bennington Elementary entrance and work finishing up on the section to the south. The school entrance area itself will be completed after school is dismissed next week. To better manage detour traffic, the city has installed new stop signs, and the Council approved a "no trucks" zone on Howard Lane. The anticipated completion of the project remains at the end of August. The latest construction schedule is posted here.
New police officer: Chief Hilscher introduced Officer Greg Kelly as Bennington's newest police officer. (Greg takes the position held by Officer Travis Herbolsheimer.) Formerly serving with the Douglas County Sheriff, Officer Kelly brings 29 years of policing experience to Bennington, and he is a resident of the area. Chief Hilscher also reminded everyone of the opportunity to participate in a ride-along with the Bennington Police Department. If you're interested, send the Chief a message at email@example.com.
Other business: The Council also:
Approved liquor permits for the Bennington Jaycees, JDUB's Hangout, Stumble Inn, and The Warehouse on Bennington Daze weekend.
Certified the final completion of additional parking along CW Hadan Drive. New parking signage will be added soon.
Learned that ASIP fee revenue, which comes from new construction outside of city limits, will total $80,000 in its first year, significantly more than budgeted. This fund will support eventual work on arterial streets such as Bennington Road.
