Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Faith
Inspires
Gratitude”
Aim:
Know the
meaning of God’s forgiveness and promise of eternal life;
Explore
our
fears about death and assurances of God’s grace;
and Repent
from
sometimes rejecting God’s grace.
Background:
Hebrews 12:14-29
Bible
Lesson:
Hebrews
12:18-29
“Wherefore
we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace,
whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:”
Hebrew
12:28 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
theme of our new quarter is “A Living Faith.” Our lesson comes
from the New Testament Book of Hebrews. It is one of the twenty one
epistles or letters of the New Testament. It’s authorship is
uncertain. It’s intended audience were Jews who had converted to
Christianity. The writer encouraged them to hold fast to their faith
in Jesus Christ, even with the pressure by some who wanted them to
mix Judaism with Christianity. The theme of the Book of Hebrews is
the Superiority and sufficiency of Jesus Christ as the revealer and
mediator of God’s grace. The author emphasizes the superiority of
Jesus Christ’s Priesthood and the New Covenant to the Levitical
priesthood and the Mosaic covenant. Our lesson
today continues our study
of Hebrews Chapter 12
and the writer continues to
instruct his readers that placing faith in Jesus Christ as
a Christian is far greater
than Judaism. God’s progressive
revelation of Himself from
Judaism to Christianity was planned before the foundation of the
world.
- Hebrews
12:18-21,
The
Two Mountains:
Sinai
and Zion (Heavenly City): The
writer reminds the readers
that
when God met Moses on Mount Sinai to give him the ten commandments,
on tablets of stone, for
the Israelites as
recorded in Exodus
Chapter
19,
only
Moses was allowed to come near and to ascend the mountain, anyone
else, whether man or beast, who
touched
the mountain would die. The mountain experience at Sinai included
thunder, smoke, a mountain quaking, trumpet blasts from God’s
presence on the mountain. The Israelites
and Moses were frightened and the thundering voice of God caused the
people to request that Moses represent them to God.
- Hebrews
12:22-23,
The
Heavenly City
(Zion
or Sion): In
contrast to
untouchable
Mount
Sinai, Mount
Zion, which represents the new,
heavenly Jerusalem,
God,
His
Saints,
and, an
enumerable host of
angels
will
reside together in a joyful community worshiping the true and living
God. This is what acceptance and faithfulness to God and
Christianity holds in store for God’s Saints. The sacrifice of
Jesus Christ and His shed blood along
with the
Saints’ belief and faith makes this indescribable opportunity
available!
-
Hebrews
12:24,
The
Heavenly City and Jesus, Mediator:
The
writer describes the role of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, as the
mediator, the “go between” for the new covenant between
humankind and God. The blood that Jesus shed on Calvary’s Cross
was to
forgive
the
sins
of
all who
accept
Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. In contrast, the blood of Abel,
the first murder victim, cried out for vengeance which God exacted
on his murder, his brother, Cain (Genesis
4:8-12).
-
Hebrews
12:25-26,
Criteria
for Entering the Heavenly City:
With
the readers familiarity with the Israelites’ wilderness
experience, the
writer
warns
them to not reject the invitation from Jesus to faith in Him like
many Israelites rejected the invitation extended by God through
Moses be obedient to His commandments and to live. The result of
their disobedience and rejection was death in the wilderness. Jesus
Christ, the Son of God, is from heaven whereas Moses was simply
God’s earthly
messenger.
The
rejection
of
Jesus’
invitation leads to Eternal death and damnation! When God spoke at
Mount Sinai, the earth shook; however, in the future not only will
the earth be shaken, but heaven will be shaken as well.
-
Hebrews
12:27-29,
Preparing
for the Heavenly City:
In
the later days, when God fulfills His promise of shaking earth and
heaven, only God’s Kingdom which is unshakable will remain. In
light of this, the writer exhorts Saints to express gratitude
and
worship God with Holy reverence and awe of His magnificence,
goodness, and righteousness. He closes Hebrews
Chapter
12
with
the recognition that “Our God is a consuming fire!” which
acknowledges His Omnipotence, Unlimited Power!
Take
Aways:
- Acceptance
of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is nonnegotiable and is
the only path to
Eternal Life!
- Rejection
of Jesus Christ’s invitation as our Lord and Savior results in
Eternal Death and Damnation!
- Our
worship of God and expression
of gratitude
for Jesus’ sacrificial death for our sins is our reasonable
response to such love!
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“For
the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans
6:23 KJV
“Who
hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated
[us] into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption
through his blood, [even] the forgiveness of sins” Colossians
1:13-14 KJV
“Fight
the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art
also called, and hast professed a good profession before many
witnesses.” 1 Timothy
6:12
KJV
“So
you must remain faithful to what you have been taught from the
beginning. If you do, you will remain in fellowship with the Son and
with the Father. And in this fellowship we enjoy the eternal life he
promised us.” 1 John
2:24-25 NLT
“As
thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal
life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal,
that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom
thou hast sent.” John
17:2-3 KJV
