On October 6, 1999 the paperwork was filed to establish a new nonprofit dedicated to Pennsylvania's state parks and forests. Modeled on similar organizations across the US, the Friends of Pennsylvania's Parks and Forests fulfilled a goal of the State Parks 2000 strategic plan to engage users of Pennsylvania’s public lands in new ways and to become stewards of these lands.
One way in which this occurred was to establish friends groups, with the Cherry Springs Dark Sky Fund being the first in 1999. This launched a movement that has spanned the decades, which included a name change to the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation.
Our work expands beyond volunteerism, to being a voice for parks and forests, investing in projects, and ensuring a place and an experience for everyone in the outdoors. As our tag line states, “It’s just our nature to help!”
