"A great thought begins by seeing something differently, with a shift of the mind's eye." –Albert Einstein
My very favourite thing about traveling is seeing other people's regular, everyday lives. I love having the realization, over and over again, of sonder:"the profound feeling of realizing that everyone, including strangers passing in the street, has a life as complex as one's own, which they are constantly living."
I just got home from a whirlwind trip to Ireland & Romania (which, to be perfectly honest, I couldn't *quite* afford) where I got to peek into lots of lives. My favourite moments were the quotidian ones: making coffee in a friend's cozy kitchen overlooking Irish mountains, eating a plate of veggies at Mike's cousin's dining room table, barbecuing in his aunt & uncle's backyard in the country.
I love being in other people's homes for many reasons (see also: I'm a nosy Scorpio), but mostly because I love the reminder that things could so easily be different. That we always have choices. That we could change our whole lives today, if we wanted to.
It reminds me of one of my all-time favourite quotes, from A Fraction of the Whole: "Why is free will wasted on a creature who has infinite choices but pretends there are only one or two?” Infinite choices. Infinite lives. Travel reminds me that other worlds are possible for me and for all of us.
So as I return home to my little life, I come back with the knowledge that change is possible. Feeling inspired that people are moving to new cities, trying new careers, creating new offerings, rebranding businesses, getting new doggos. Understanding that when we see things differently, we can find new ways to live, to do business, to connect. Do you see it too? ❤️
I did surprisingly little reading on my vacation, mostly because it was such a whirlwind! Now that I'm back, I'm excited to be back to my books, and I started with this one, which I'm reading for one of my book clubs this month.
So far, it reminds me a little of The Handmaid's Tale and The Power, kind of dystopian and kind of thrilling, definitely a fun and fast-paced read. The perfect thing to break me out of my reading rut.
I'm super excited to announce my new offering, All Systems Go. I've been beta testing it behind-the-scenes with a client for the past few months & am excited to launch it into the world!
This is a bespoke systems setup service for your business, whether you want to create a Notion workspace, set up Asana with your team, or (my favourite!) create a beautiful onboarding process in an app like Honeybook or Dubsado. Learn more & apply here, I have limited spots available for Fall 2022.
The transparent update this month is that there's no formal update! After two years straight of monthly updates, I took a break this month from my business, my social media, and my "official" social justice work. I'll be back next month with another update.
In the meantime, please let me know if there are actions, resources, petitions, books, or podcasts that you have been investigating in your own social justice journey! I always appreciate it.
