Fun ways to learn about the bible! View in browser
Who says religious education needs to be done in a classroom?

Learn about the bible, and the saints within it, with all the crafts, songs, and activities kids love about VBS! (I have tried to select Catholic resources wherever possible.)

Monday

  • Morning - Introduction to the Bible, and the books of the Old  Testament.  Show how the books are grouped in different sections and start work on a timeline showing when they were written. (This is just a guide to help kids understand the order of the stories and how events led up to the coming of Jesus. Be as specific or general as you want.) **Modify games from Gen to Rev: 10 Fun Activities to Teach Kids the Books of the Bible
  • Afternoon- Today you'll focus on some of the Old Testament figures from the Pentateuch. Pick two to four. Add them to your time line, or even reuse some Jesse Tree ornaments! Or pick a craft! (Search the site for the story or person you're focusing on.) Hide toy animals around the house or yard and have your kids scamper to find them and get them on the ark in under 60, or 30, seconds.
  • Evening - Read scripture together as a family or read stories from a Catholic children's bible. Work on a new song while everyone sets or clears the table.

Tuesday

  • Morning - Introduce your kids to figures from the Historical books and add them to your timeline. Pick a game to reinforce the lesson. My personal favorite would be the 'Jacobs Ladder' if you have enough kids.
  • Afternoon - Learn about figures from the Prophetic books, and add them to your timeline. Pick a craft and video from yesterday's playlists. Practice your song, or work on a new one.
  • Evening - Read some of the Psalms and Proverbs together; what are your favorite? **Consider starting Growing in Grace with the Fruit of the Spirit: Family Bible Study by Amy Tol

Wednesday

  • Morning - Introduce the New Testament, and the four Gospels. Focus on John the Baptist, Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and the 12 apostles. Add them to your timeline and pick a game from yesterday's link.
  • Afternoon- Who are the writers of the Gospels? Talk about Sts Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. When are their feast days celebrated?
  • Evening - Read from the Gospels tonight, maybe compare the same story from two different books. Consider watching a movie about the life of Christ. 'Risen' is a great movie appropriate for all ages.

Thursday

  • Morning - Talk about the book of Acts; it's where we find mention of Pentecost- the birthday of the Church! Fly a kite and bake a cake to celebrate!
  • Afternoon- Time for the Epistles (which means letters). Write letters, or draw pictures, to mail to friends and family members. Learn about St. Paul who wrote many of the Epistles. ** Use scripture pages from the Character Copywork Workbook by Sarah Avila as letter starters.
  • Evening - Update your timeline with the rest of your New Testament saints. Have a family discussion: Who are your favorite people on the timeline? What are your favorite bible stories? What would you like to read more about?
