Hello Friends and Family! In the last nine months, I, Hannah Braswell, have dressed and processed a deer, learned to change a tire, ran a half marathon, and made some lifelong friendships. I've spent nearly 1500 hours in intensive discipleship and life skill training with seminary graduates, doctors, faithful parents, missionaries, and tradesmen/women, being intentionally evaluated, exhorted, and encouraged along the way. This has all been a part of Denton Bible’s ministry to young adults called GAP (God’s Alternative Program), and I want you to know how it’s changed my life.
How has GAP equipped me? In GAP we studied theology, worldview, church history, Bible study methods, effective evangelism, speaking, writing, literature, etc. The intensive class time and service hours have been like a water hose to the face. One of our instructors told me that I would forget more than most people would ever be taught, and I can assure you that I have forgotten much, but here are a few things I will always remember.
(1) GAP has shown me that I have a church community! I have been convicted and convinced by the steady and overwhelming display of love from the Church that I am to show this love back through prayer and service no matter what stage of life I’m in or where I live. (2) GAP has shown me how to manage my time. Not only did the leadership hold each student accountable for being on time and ready for class, life skills, and events, but they also taught us organization and calendar management to ensure we were equipped to maintain a strenuous schedule after GAP. (3) GAP has shown me that I have the living word of God at my fingertips and all that matters is I read it, meditate on it, and share it! If I am faithful to the normalities and routines of everyday life, it will soon add up to my entire life span. My mom used to tell me, “Every day is, but a life, and a life is but a day well lived.” GAP took this truth from a pithy saying to a weighty reality.
Where am I headed?
I am staying in Denton, TX, for the foreseeable future! Of course, life can throw curves, and I am open to what the Lord has for me, but for now, I am happy to stay put! I am working full-time as a chairside assistant for an orthodontist and will attend Collin Community College in the fall to pursue dental hygiene, which will be a three- to four-year process. I will continue being an active church member, ministering in the choir, and witnessing through a college outreach ministry called Ratio-Christi. I will continue reading and memorizing scripture, and I have an accountability partner to ensure I stay faithful despite the business or everyday life. I couldn’t be more excited, and I couldn’t be more thankful for my church community in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who made this vision I had for discipleship a reality and fed my hungry soul. When I visit my family on weekends, I hope to see you all, who have kindly and lovingly supported me through this adventure. Thank you again!
