Good morning, on this last day of 2023!
Year-end recaps are one of my favorite rituals of late December. The months of each year really do rush by, and even things that are significant when they happen can easily diminish in our memories if we don't make a point of re-living them from time to time. So the challenge of remembering what each month of 2023 contained is a welcome one.
A lot happened in 2023 for me-- for all of us-- and I won't turn this into a personal reverse-journal. But here's a recap of my Pointe and Dance Magazine pieces which, as I take myself back into their topics, seem like a great way to ponder.... things.
I published six Pointe magazine articles and one for Dance Mag (along with a handful of Oregon Ballet Theatre Playbill features, which I won't link individually but you can access below), starting with a profile of ballerina Xuan Cheng on the occasion of her transition from Oregon Ballet Theatre principal to the dual role of ballet master and principal dancer with Hong Kong Ballet.
Along with the articles, I taught hundreds of ballet classes, interviewed dozens of dancers for the book that Gene and I WILL complete in the coming year (insert crossed-fingers emoji here!), wrote the first few chapters of that book, traveled to Northfield, MN, for a family reunion, to Eureka Springs, AK, for a writing residency, to Charleston, SC, for another one, to Virginia for a visit with my beloved uncle and aunt, and to New York for the holidays, which is where I sit now, as I write this.
Connecting with you all via this newsletter on most Sundays of this year has been an education, a fun task, and I hope a positive addition ot your inboxes. Please know that while this letter may not be individually addressed to each one of you, my wishes for a happy, healthy, fulfilling, exciting, adventuresome and prosperous 2024 go directly from my heart to yours!
Happy New Year!
