Spring, in climatology, is the season of the year between winter and summer, during which temperatures gradually rise.
While we can have something growing all year round in our region, there is a level of excitement in the air as things start to come back into activity after the slow growth of winter: new flowers and new growth, new life leading to new beginnings.
The planning and sowing of new season fruits and revisiting personal and professional context to make sure that the year ahead is still taking us towards where we want to be, building not just the site but the life we want. This is important as we can lose ourselves in the day to day and forget how important it is to dream of that future..
To dream gives us hope, allowing us the space to dream and approach life with a generous mindset rather than one of scarcity.
Our motto is about Making it Real. Making it real is not going to be easy, but like all things of value, it will be worth it.
So, we ask you. How are you going to make it real?

One important thing to both Victoria and myself is the carbon footprint and the impact on our planet. Unfortunately, we do not have a planet B, so we must start thinking of future generations. Many first nations people worldwide make decisions based on the next seven generations ahead, understanding that we are only borrowing this space from future generations.
This led to a conversation Victoria, and I had about what we can do to help alleviate what we are doing with our fossil fuel consumption.
It was an interesting conversation as we wanted to do more. Our consults take us to all sorts of places. While we have a very positive impact not just on landscapes but also on people's lives, there is still that underlying truth. That fuels have been used while we were in service to our client and their landscapes. The question remained, "what can we do?"

In this workshop, we will explore the mysteries of the potager garden. Come spend the day Bayside in Wynnum as we look at and explore the Permaculture Potager. A vegetable garden in France is named a potager which comes from potage, which is vegetable soup. The vegetable patch has often been a part of the garden separated from the rest and treated like a small farm field— ploughed (or rototilled), planted for the season in rows, and then left fallow. The potager is, first of all, a permanent garden— decorative, cultivated by hand methods, integrating shrubs, trees, paths, and herbs, vegetables, and flowers. In this workshop, we will explore the mysteries of the potager garden. Plants were grown for many purposes—flowers, vegetables, herbs, privacy, etc. We’ll discuss the intensive soil preparation for close planting and continuous cropping, and the growth and care of fruits and vegetables, decorative design—some call it edible landscaping and production for much or all of the year

Garden fermenting is the process of cultivating local Microorganisms through simple, natural, and affordable methods. Garden fermenting, both aerobic and anaerobic, allows gardeners to create all organic and high-grade living fertilizers for our gardens. In this course, we will look at where these ideas have come from and how they can be applied. This will include how to make some of the ferments and how to apply them. This class is designed to enable anyone to become a microbial gardener.

Get hands-on building a self-contained wicking planter full of seasonal plants. Wicking beds are a smart way to water plants from below, providing consistent damp conditions. These self-watering systems allow water stored in the base to ‘wick’ up through the soil. Having water readily available at the roots helps healthy plant growth and reduces mildew or fungal problems. In this workshop, you will be shown how to build your own wicking bed.

Last month at Savour Soil we got up to..........

Wow what a month - starting with our 8 day lock down. Homeschooling instead of designing and kicking off 2 PDC courses via zoom. Safe to say preparing to move the course content online, just incase (the prepared warrior wins the battle), was no easy feat.
Squeezing 4 weeks of consults in to 3 was tricky but our clients are all wonderfully understanding and we had so much fun meeting lots of new permaculture inspired people.

The annual Savour Soil PDC is going really well with an absolutely amazing group of participants bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge, great discussions happening in our new venue in Ipswich.
Last year the group moto was "save the swales" but this years group will forever be known as the "It Dependables" and we love it.

Walter Jehne -- Processes Governing the Biofertility of Our Soils, Food and Preventative Health |
|
In this session, Walter connects mycelia and gut flora, how they serve similar functions on different scales with almost poetic parallels, and how the fungal membrane uptake intelligences perform nearly the same in the soil ecosystem as in our gut biome.

This is one of the programs we use to build our designs for clients. This years participants of our PDC have been benefitting from our extensive experience with tutorials on how to build base maps and add layers. All building to some impressive professional looking presentations at the end of the course.
