Fee-for-Service Can Convert Your Available Capacity and Expertise to Research Funds

With pandemic restrictions lifting, there is renewed opportunity to use your existing resources and technology in your lab(s) to generate additional funding with fee-for-service work. Fee-for-Service income can be used to supplement areas of your research where traditional grant funds are not applicable.

Fee-for-Service activities generally include service projects for which an external client requests a specific deliverable which you generate using established theories, methods and experiments while leveraging special or unique MSU capabilities. The results of such work are of specific interest to the client.

DER can help you with your Fee-for-Service projects by:

Starting Export Control processes
Facilitate the setting of rates
Develop budgets
Create accounts

Subject: Upcoming Changes to the Biographical Sketch and Other Support Format Page

NIH has released NOT-OD-21-073 outlining changes to the Biographical Sketch and Other Support format. These updates are effective beginning May 25, 2021 and apply to applications, Just-in-Time (JIT) submissions and Research Performance Progress Reports (RPPR).

Summary of Changes

Biographical Sketch

Section B is renamed ‘Positions, Scientific Appointments, and Honors’
Section D is removed from the non-Fellowship Biosketch. Details on ongoing and completed research projects from the past three years may be included in the personal statement, Section A.
Section D on the Fellowship Biosketch is updated to remove ‘Research Support’

A template, instructions and FAQs are available on the NIH website. The updated template will be available in SciENcv later this month, allowing Investigators with an existing biosketch in SciENcv to transfer the information to the new format.

Other Support

Forms have been reorganized to separate funded projects from in-kind support
A signature block is added for the Program Director/Principal Investigator or Other Senior/Key Personnel to certify to its accuracy
For submissions that include non-domestic activities and resources, senior/key personnel are required to submit copies of contracts, grants or any other agreement specific to their non-domestic appointments, affiliations and/or employment with a non-domestic institution. All supporting documents have to be in English and must be included as part of the Other Support submission.

An Other Support format page, instructions and FAQs are available on the NIH website. NIH anticipates this will also be available in SciENcv beginning in FY22. Until that time, use of the format page available on their website will be required, converted to PDF and electronically signed.

Engineering Research Reactivation SharePoint

The Engineering Research Reactivation all-inclusive SharePoint page has helpful reopening resources, important processes, and documents that need to be completed and approved to "return to research". Please request access if prompted.

Important Announcement:

Where is my "LABORATORY PLAN FOR A SAFE RETURN" in the approval process?

You can see what step of the approval process your plan is on by looking under the “Engineering Research Reactivation” folders on the SharePoint site.

If the plan has been approved by the Department Chair, you can see if it has been sent to VPRI by clicking on “EGR ADR Review” > “At VPRI for Review”. If the plan is in the “At VPRI for Review” folder then it is currently being reviewed by VPRI.
To check to see if your plan has been completely approved by all required departments (DC, EGR Dean's Office, and VPRI), you can click on the “VPRI Final Approved Plans” folder. If your plan is in the “VPRI Final Approved Plans” folder then you approved to return to research. Monique Blackmer (monique@msu.edu) will reach out to you.

Funding Opportunity: Merck KGaA 2021 Research Grants

Merck KGaA has released a series of research grants to stimulate innovative research in challenging areas of future importance. These areas are:

Drug discovery
Real time testing and sensors
Nano particles for nucleic acid delivery
Digital innovation
Bioelectronics
Sustainability
Media recycling for cultured meat
Organoids

Funding: $100,000 - $547,000/yr for up to three years

Paralyzed Veterans of American--Spinal Cord Injury/Disease Research

PVA is seeking proposals for research grounded in basic laboratory science and the education of scientists working on breakthroughs directed toward a cure for paralysis, secondary health effects and technologies associated with spinal cord injury or disease (SCI/D). Projects should be designed to find better treatments and cures for paralysis and support efforts to improve the quality of life of individuals with SCI/D until improved clinical treatments, technologies or cures are discovered, as well as to train post-doctoral fellow investigators and encourage them to specialize in the area of spinal cord research. Grants are up to $150,000. Applications are due July 1, 2021.

Opioid Crisis Innovation Challenge 2021

The Foundation for Opioid Response Efforts will provide grant support for specific projects that bring an innovative approach to long-standing and complex issues related to all aspects of stemming the tide of the nation’s opioid crisis. This RFP targets projects which can explore and/or evaluate new “outside-the-box” ideas, bring together approaches from several diverse fields, and engage multidisciplinary, cross-sector teams to solve some of the crisis’ most intractable problems.
