I’ve been puzzling about what to write to you this month, when my heart is sick about what’s going on in our country. What do we do when the world and our country seem to have gone mad? Do I ignore how worried I am? That doesn’t seem right.
I went to a get together of writers who have contributed stories to a Key West noir anthology that will be out in March 2027. Chatting with one of the editors, Cheryl Tan, we had this exact discussion. Even when the world is on fire, we do what we are meant to do, we write, she said. So I have been writing. But I’m also calling my senators and donating to funds who are doing work I admire.
Of course while the world whirls around us, we need to take care of ourselves as well. Here in Key West, we’ve seen lots of friends and eaten good things and all that is good. As Sam Sifton once said: Cooking helps turn off your brain for a while. Cooking allows you to heal.
So let us work together for truth and justice when we can, and then cook, and eat, and read! Since my head and my writing have been in Paris this month, I’m borrowing my closing from The Real Emily in Paris: Whatever you’re up against and wherever you are in the world I hope you have a safe and uneventful week.
Love,
