In two of the largest ports in Western Europe, transhipment volumes were lower in 2023 compared to the year 2022. In the ports of Antwerp - Brugge, the decrease was 5.5%. The port of Rotterdam recorded a reduced throughput of 6.1%. There was a decrease in transhipment of coal, crude oil and mineral oil products, among others, as well as containers. In contrast, there was an increase in import and export of agribulk, scrap and LNG.
Despite the reduced throughput, the major seaports in the Netherlands and Belgium remain very important for the European economy. The number of ship movements and the total volumes of cargo handled remain large.
