GEDC is celebrating Economic Development Week! Looking back over its 27 years, the GEDC is proud to have worked on projects totaling over $2.7 billion in private investment which represents over 3,000 new jobs for residents. These last 12 months were very difficult for our small business and hospitality industries. Fortunately, other business sectors like energy and logistics supply chain continued to see investments.

Labor Force Challenges
Are you experiencing challenges finding employees? Due to COVID, childcare, or the extra unemployment dollars, businesses are struggling to find labor and the local data backs this up. Grundy County’s labor force has shrunk, but the unemployment rate is still higher than pre-pandemic levels.
5.5% reduction in the labor force from February 2020 to February 2021
6.6% March 2021 unemployment rate compared to a year ago at 4.8%
Negotiations are intensifying as the legislative session draws to an end on May 31st. There are six energy bills, but only one fully addresses keeping Dresden and the nuclear stations open, the Clean Union Jobs Act (CUJA). That bill is HB 1472 and SB 1100 on the Senate side. In the coming two weeks, the General Assembly will attempt to consolidate and pare down the bills into a clean energy policy for Illinois.
If you are able/willing, please copy this form letter onto your letterhead and mail it to Governor Pritzker's office today!. Time is running out to save our nuclear stations.
Grants, Incentives, and More
It absolutely can get overwhelming and difficult to keep it all straight. But please pay attention to alerts and messages from the GEDC in the coming weeks. Some incentives are already out, others will be in the weeks ahead. A few to look out for:
American Rescue Plan which will have a significant economic development component
Rental Assistance Program
SBA Restaurant Revitalization Program
CARES Act funding at a state and local level
Going in the Right Direction - COVID Update
There are new guidelines for businesses as Illinois moves into the Bridge Phase. Please click here for additional information.
Congratulations! Morris Hospital has received a Five-Star overall hospital quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the highest rating a hospital can achieve. Just 13% of the 3,355 hospitals in the country have a Five-Star overall rating. This is the first time the hospital has received a Five-Star overall rating from CMS. They also received another ‘A’ on the most recent Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade that was released April 29, the hospital’s sixth consecutive since fall of 2018. This national distinction recognizes Morris Hospital’s achievements in protecting patients from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.
