Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Babylonian
Captivity Ends”
Aim: Examine
the
rebuilding
plan for the Temple in Jerusalem that God gave to King Cyrus;
Believe
and
Trust
that
God provides
resources for the task God asks us to do;
and Share
situations in which believers will trust God’s provision and act in
faith.
Background:
Ezra
1; 2:64-70
Bible Lesson:
Ezra
1:1-8,
11;
2:64-70
Memory
Verse:
“And [some] of the chief of the fathers, when they came
to the house of the LORD which [is] at Jerusalem, offered freely for
the house of God to set it up in his place:” Ezra
2:68
KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
Our Study exemplifies
God’s
faithfulness in fulfilling His Promises, His Grace toward humankind
even in spite of disobedience, His providential care provided by an
unexpected ruler, and His
ability to touch the hearts of men to do His Will.
-
Ezra
1:1, Revelation of a Stirred
Heart: A Gentile ruler,
King Cyrus of Persia is used in the fulfillment of the prophesy
given by God to Jeremiah (Jeremiah
29:10)
regarding the return of exiles from
the southern kingdom to
Jerusalem from Babylonia captivity after 70 years. King Cyrus not
only verbally proclaimed his intent to allow the Hebrew people
to return to Jerusalem, but he issued a proclamation which was
circulated throughout his kingdom.
-
Ezra
1:2-4, The
Proclamation of a Stirred Heart: King
Cyrus’ proclamation acknowledged that God had given him
the position of ruler of
all the kingdoms over which he reigned. He further claimed an
appointment to build a Temple for God in Jerusalem in Judah. His
proclamation granted permission to all willing Hebrew people to
return to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple of the Lord, the God of
Israel. He confers God’s blessings upon them for this task.
Additionally, the proclamation decreed that those in the area must
contribute resources, gold, silver, supplies
for the journey, livestock and
free will offerings to finance the building of the Temple as well as
to provide
for
those things needed in
Jerusalem after their arrival.
-
Ezra
1:5-11, The
Response of a Stirred Heart: God
not only moved in
the heart of King Cyrus, but He moved
in the hearts of the priest, Levites and the leaders of the tribe of
Judah and Benjamin to be willing to travel to Jerusalem with the
objective of rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem. The hearts of their
neighbors were moved to generously give silver, gold, supplies for
the journey, and livestock. They even gave valuable gifts
beyond the voluntary offerings.
King Cyrus personally returned the articles which the Babylonian
King Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the original Temple when the
Hebrew people were taken into captivity and the Temple was
destroyed. The sacred articles had been placed in
the temple of the
Babylonian gods. To insure that everything was in order, King Cyrus
directed his treasurer to inventory the temple articles before
presenting them to
the Hebrew leader of the exiles who
were returning to
Jerusalem. These sacred articles numbered 5,400 and were made of
gold and silver.
-
Ezra
2:64-70,
The Gifts of Stirred Hearts: The
returning
delegation of Hebrews was no small group. There were 42,360 people
of Judah along with 7,337 servants and 200 men and women singers.
Their beast of burden included 736 horses, 245 mules, 435 camels,
and 6.720 donkeys. The
distance between Babylonian and Jerusalem was estimated to be 1,700
miles and to have taken 4 months of travel. When the delegation
arrived in Jerusalem, some of the family leaders generously gave
offerings to be used for the rebuilding of God’s Temple on it’s
original site. The gifts totaled 61,000 gold coins, 6,250 pounds of
silver, and 100 robes for the priests. The priest, the Levites, the
singers, the gatekeepers, the Temple servants, and some of the
common people settled in villages near Jerusalem while others
returned to their ancestral villages in Israel.
Take
Aways:
-
You can depend on God
to
keep His Promises
-
God
always prepares
us and provides
provisions for tasks that He directs
and/or
sanctions.
-
God’s
means of fulfilling of His
Will
may
come
from
the most unexpected sources
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“And
Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he
said, Here [am] I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood:
but where [is] the lamb for a burnt offering? And Abraham said, My
son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they
went both of them together.” Genesis
22:7-8 KJV
“The
earth [is] the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they
that dwell therein.” Psalma
24:1 KJV
“But
seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all
these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew
6:33 KJV
“Be
strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them,
for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor
forsake you."” Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV
“The
steps of a [good] man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in
his way.” Psalms
37:23 KJV
“But
the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send
in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to
your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” John
14:26 KJV
