Let me start by saying that this is definitely one of those times where the book was better than the TV series.
I tried watching the first episode of Dark Matter on Apple TV last night and was so disappointed in it that I won’t be returning for the rest. The music is odd and too loud, the characters mumble, and I didn’t particularly care for the cast. I’m not normally so critical of TV or movie adaptations, but this one left a sour taste in my mouth that I should’ve washed down with a hearty glug of Mermaid gin.
Enough of my rant.
Now, onto the book, which was nothing short of fantastic. The premise revolves around Jason Dessen, a man leading a seemingly average life with his wife, child, and a decent job as a college professor. His world is upended one night when he's kidnapped, knocked unconscious, and awakens in a reality that mirrors his own yet is starkly different. In this new world, he's a celebrated scientist, but alarmingly, he has no family.
I’m drawn to stories that explore questions about destiny, love, and paths not taken. Blake Crouch has achieved this in Dark Matter, crafting a tightly paced plot infused with an intriguing sense of mystery that kept me helplessly glued to the pages. The story not only captivates but also prompts introspection about your own 'what ifs.'
In short, I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a sci-fi thriller with underlying themes personal resilience and family loyalty. Now, if only I could say the same about the series.
That being said, if you’ve watched the Apple TV series and enjoyed it, I would love nothing more than to be proved wrong. So tell me…is it worth continuing?
