Tickets for this special event at the Seamus Heaney Homeplace are priced at £12 and can be ordered by clicking on the picture above or the button below.
The seven strong Hellas Ensemble will present six new compositions inspired by Seamus Heaney's Sonnets from Hellas. Heaney was an Irish poet and Nobel laureate.
The evening will open with an introduction from Bruce Clark focusing on Heaney's two landmark journeys through Greece, where he delighted in the landscape's classical connections as well as its unchanging physical beauty. One journey, in 1995, took him to Sparta and Pylos, where news of the Nobel Prize cut short his travels. Another, in 1997, included ancient Olympia and Delphi. Heaney drew on these travels to pen six Sonnets from Hellas which joyfully interweave ancient and modern Greek themes as well as intimations of his native Ireland.
This will be followed by a brief introduction and demonstration of the Greek and Irish bouzoukis from Nikos Petsakos and Martin Coyle looking at the history of the instrument, its development and its own Celtic - Hellenic story with its introduction into Irish music and the event will be interspersed with readings of Heaney’s Sonnets.
I look forward to seeing you there!
