Today's Bible Study Lesson
“The
Word Gives
Peace”
Aim:
Explore the
relationationship between
God, Jesus, and the Holy
Spirit;
Be
Encouraged
that
Jesus offers us peace in the Holy Spirit;
and Commit
to
obeying Christ rather than the prince of darkness.
Background:
John 14:15-31
Bible
Lesson:
John
14:15-29
“And
I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that
he may abide with you for ever;” John
14:16 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
Apostle John is the author of the Gospel According to John and the
New Testament Books of 1, 2, and 3 John. John was one of Jesus
twelve disciples and on many occasions he was referred to as “the
disciple that Jesus loved.” While dying on the cross for the sins
of humankind, Jesus assigned the care of His “earthly mother” to
John. John was a member of Jesus’ inner circle of disciples,
Peter, James, and John who were with Jesus at the Mount of
Transfiguration and in the Garden of Gethsemane. The Gospel
According to John differs from the Synoptic Gospels (According to
Matthew, to Mark, and to Luke), in that it deals in great detail
with many doctrinal matters and facts. In
today’s lesson as
Jesus’ earthly ministry approaches a close, he gives encouragement
and comfort to his
disciples. He promises that God the Father will send another
Comforter, the Holy Spirit who had
walked with them, but in
the future the
Holy Spirit will dwell
within them forever. Jesus bestows upon them a peace that can only
come when one places his/her trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and
Savior.
- John
14:15-20,
The
Counselor as Teacher:
This
passage begins with Jesus stating that obeying his commandments (His
Words)
is evidence of love for him. In other words, love for Jesus must be
demonstrated and
not just be
proclaimed.
As an act of Jesus’ love for his disciples, he will ask God the
Father to give to
them another Comforter, who will dwell within
them forever. Jesus who
has been their comforting companion while on earth
is concluding his earthly ministry as the God man and is returning
to God the
Father
who sent him. Jesus
identifies this Comforter as none other than the Holy Spirit, the
Third Person of the God Head. The Holy Spirit will lead his
disciples into all truth. This Comforter will not be received by
those who trust in the world because they are not looking for Him,
nor will they recognize Him. On the other hand, those who trusted
Jesus Christ experienced the Holy Spirit walking along side them,
but
He will soon reside within them. Even
though
Jesus
is
about to depart for heaven,
he would
not
abandon
his disciples.
In a short time, even though Jesus
would die on the cross, they would
see him again; however, those who trusted
in the world would not see him. As further evidence of his
Messiahship and
his coexistence with God the
Father,
after dying on the cross, Jesus would raise from the dead. Those
who trusted
in him are
in him as he is in God the
Father
and he is in them. What a
wondrous
union is experienced by those who trust Jesus as Lord and Savior!
- John
14:21-24,
The
Counselor as Prosecutor:
Jesus again exclaims that
those who love
him will gladly receive his commandments (His
Words)
and obey them. Those who
love Jesus are loved by God the Father, the First Person of the God
Head. Jesus not only will love
those who trust him, but he
will reveal
himself to them. In other words, his relationship with them will be
a close fellowship with them. After hearing Jesus’ discourse,
Judas ( not Judas Iscariot who betrayed
Jesus), a disciple of Jesus, asked the question, why or how are you
just revealing yourself to us and not to
the whole world. Jesus’
response is that those who love him and obey his commandments (His
Words)
will be loved by both God
the Father and himself. God
the Son and God the Father
will enter into their hearts and dwell with them providing an
everlasting fellowship experience. On the other hand, those who
don’t love him as evidenced by their unwillingness to obey his
commandments (His Words)
will not enjoy the everlasting fellowship experience of God the Son
and God the Father. Jesus tells Judas that this answer comes from
God the Father, who sent him.
-
John
14:25-29,
The
Counselor as Gift:
Jesus
explains that he is
sharing
with his disciples while he is still there with them, because a time
is
coming
when he will no longer be with them physically. He
describes the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, who Father God will send
to them as one who will teach all things and will bring to the
disciples’ rememberance all the things that Jesus had shared with
them during his earthly ministry. This gift will provide the
disciples with a peace unlike the temporary peace offered by the
world. He goes on to encourage them to not be troubled or to be
afraid because of his departure from the world. Jesus reminds them
that he talked about his departure on other ocassions, and
he
reassures them that he will return. Those who really love him should
be happy that he is returning to the position of coexistence and
co-equality with God the Father. Jesus
reassures his disciples that he is
sharing
with
them what
will happen in the future so their belief
will be strengthened. Oh, how He loves you and me and provides such
reassurance for today and for the future!
Take
Aways:
- The
Triune
God is real with God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit
fulfilling their separate
responsibilities in total agreement
- The
Third Person of the God Head dwells in
us providing Comfort, teaching us all things, and bringing to our
rememberance the Words of God
- The
Peace that Jesus left with his disciples is available to us today
and it is unlike the temporary peace that the world offers.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Be
anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication,
with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the
peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your
hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians
4:6-7 NKJV
“"Let
not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.
"In My Father's house are many mansions; if [it were] not [so],
I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. "And if
I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you
to Myself; that where I am, [there] you may be also.” John
14:1-3 NKJV
“[Let
your] conversation [be] without covetousness; [and be] content with
such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee,
nor forsake thee.” Hebrew
13:5 KJV
“I
will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
My help [cometh] from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will
not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not
slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor
sleep.” Psalms
121:1-4
KJV
