TYNEIDOLS – MY GENERATION, A LIKELY STORY

Diehard fans of 60’s/70’s cult comedy classic ‘The Likely Lads’ were joined by legendary writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais on a one-off whirlwind TyneIdols bus tour of filming locations used in the BBC sitcom. Hosted by Lindisfarne drummer Ray Laidlaw, this one-off tour retraced the footsteps of ‘Likely Lads’ Bob and Terry (Rodney Bewes and James Bolam) when guests visited ‘The Collingwood Arms’ in Jesmond, AKA ‘The Black Horse’ as featured in the 1973 Christmas Special and the ‘Ivanhoe Guest House’ in Whitley Bay as featured in the 1976 feature length film. As expected, one or two Auf Wiedersehen, Pet filming locations were thrown in for good measure with Ian and Dick offering an incredible insight into their formative years leading to the birth of some of the finest comedy drama television has to offer.

Check out the day’s events chronicled by local photographer Paul Glass in this beautifully produced memento of the day using the button below.

With special thanks to guests Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais.

CHRIS & SIMON DONALD – ‘THEM OFF THE VIZ’

The Auf Wiedersehen, Pet team were honoured to join TyneIdols ‘Them off the Viz’ tour with legendary Viz magazine founders Chris and Simon Donald.  In addition to endless anecdotes from their early years writing the comic, this three-hour bus tour took fans around the sights, sounds and haunts of Newcastle that inspired and made Viz ‘the’ No. 1 sweary toilet magazine of all time. Guests enjoyed travelling to numerous locations and watering holes that influenced the magazines timeless content.

With PC firmly thrown out the window, this unforgettable tour and Q&A session was packed with hilarious tales of growing up creating the Viz comic prior to it becoming a national publication which continues to grow strong to this day.

Famed for their legendary cartoon characters, spoof adverts and quick wit, fans were invited to ‘Spender pound on Jimmy Nails and say Auf Wiedersehen to joinery fixing problems!’ – further proof ‘The Donald Brothers’ haven’t lost their comic genius!
