A Case For The Accra Botanical Gardens (By Mrs J Zwennes)

Trees are vital to the existence of man on planet earth. It has been said that when the last tree dies, the last man dies.

This is because trees provide us with the fuel we need for life. Just as engines need petrol for energy, we humans need oxygen to survive, we can't move without it. With every breath of carbon dioxide man exhales, he breathes in oxygen from the atmosphere.

Trees absorb our carbon dioxide and give oxygen which is life-giving for us. Clearly if we cut down the trees, we put our lives in jeopardy.

God commissioned Adam to plant trees in the Garden of Eden and to tend them for a purpose- to sustain life, so why are we cutting down trees to the point of vandalism?

In addition trees attract rainfall which we need for our crops. Do you see trees in the Sahara Desert? Do we really want to cut down our trees and ultimately produce a desert?

In certain countries trees are protected. For instance in the United Kingdom the oak tree is protected and you are not allowed to cut it. You even need permission from the authorities to trim it and it is done under supervision.

In Ghanaian tradition before a tree could be cut certain rituals had to be performed by the traditional priests. They knew what they were doing.

Man has created an in balance in the eco-system of the planet resulting in fires and floods, tornados and hurricanes, tidal waves and tsunamis, rising levels in the ocean. The earth is overheating and groaning under the heavy burdens Morden man has imposed on it. The Sahara desert is encroaching in African countries in the North . The signs are all there for those who have eyes to see. We cut down trees at our peril. Let us tread very carefully here.
