Extraordinary Perseverance

When we see a person succeed, we often assume IQ (Intelligence Quotient) is a main factor in their success. In psychologist Angela Duckworth’s research, she found that why successful people succeed is based more on their AQ (Adversity Quotient) than their IQ.*

Adversity Quotient refers to how much adversity a person can overcome. This ability is called grit. “Grit is passion and perseverance for the long-term goals.” It is the ability to keep going – no matter what!

All of us have felt like quitting or giving up on something at one time or another. It could be:

  • Your Marriage or other Relationships – Too far gone; things will never change
  • A Dream – Too late now
  • Addiction – I’ve tried to overcome but keep falling back in
  • A Prayer – Is God listening?

We know we need to keep going and believing – but HOW?

Just Keep Walking

When we face challenges and difficulties, the answer may be to just keep walking. We see this principle played out when God’s people defeated Jericho (Joshua 6:1-11 and 6:20).

When Joshua and his soldiers came to the fortified city of Jericho, it was closed up tight against them. Yet, the Lord told Joshua, “Look, I have handed Jericho, its king, and its best soldiers over to you.” Before the battle ever began, God said, “I have handed” (past tense) because the victory was already done!

The People’s Part: God’s instructions were for the Israelite soldiers to simply march around the walls of the city of Jericho one time each day for six days. Then on the seventh day, they were to march around the city seven times while the priests blew the rams’ horns. After the seventh lap, the priests would blow a prolonged blast upon the horns and all the troops were to give a mighty shout. Despite how ridiculous this battle plan sounded to them the troops followed these instructions.

God’s Part: It happened exactly the way God said it would happen. “…The troops gave a great shout, and the wall collapsed. The troops advanced into the city, each man straight ahead, and they captured the city.” Joshua 6:20

God can bring down walls in your life too if you just keep walking.

Finding the Grit to Keep Going

  • Look to God Not at the Problem

The walls of Jericho were real and BIG, and seemed impenetrable. Our problems are real and often BIG too, but focusing on the problem rather than on God can lead to anxiety, confusion, and hopelessness. Remember, whatever we are facing, GOD IS BIGGER!

“You are from God, little children, and you have conquered them, because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” 1 John 4:4

  • Trust the Way of the Lord

Sometimes God tells us to do things that don’t make sense to us . . . things like forgive others, give away some of our money or time, be willing to die to self, or love our enemies. When we choose to trust God rather than what we see or feel, there is nothing God cannot do.

“Some take pride in chariots, and others in horses, but we take pride in the name of the Lord our God. They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand firm.” Psalm 20:7-8

  • Remember the Reward

Even if we don’t know how everything is going to turn out, we know that God loves us and always wants the best for us.

“So don’t throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you need endurance, so that after you have done God’s will, you may receive what was promised.” Hebrews 10:35-36

Endurance = Perseverance = Ability to Keep Going

You may be closer than you think to seeing your dream or goal accomplished, that prayer answered, or finding success in an area God has called you to pursue.

One More Step

God calls us to have extraordinary perseverance and with God, we can keep going.

“So we must not get tired of doing good, for we will reap at the proper time if we don’t give up.” Galatians 6:9

What is God telling you to do that you are about to give up on?

Take one more step. Even if things don’t work out the way you think –

We Keep Going to Gain The Eternal Reward
