Wind Turbines in Sunset

Hi ,

To say 2020 has been challenging would be an understatement! Based in Melbourne, we have gone from extreme bushfires to a pandemic that has shut down Victoria not just once, but twice.

Through all the turmoil the energy markets have held up well. Demand has dropped just a couple of percent compared to 12 months ago. However electricity prices have dipped, and we discuss some of the reasons behind this. We also delve into the future of Portland Aluminium smelter, and what that might mean for electricity prices.

Our Amcor case study looks at the issues large energy users face in fragmented markets. With high energy requirements and complex contracts in place, Amcor has used Smart Power to provide clarity when choosing new suppliers.

Sustainability is a vital long-term goal – but how do you achieve it? The first step should be to create accurate reports on your actual carbon emissions. This may sound daunting but there’s a simple solution. Scroll down to find out more.

Similar question marks hang over Rio Tinto’s three Australian aluminium smelters. Last year Rio’s CEO stated that they were “on very thin ice” in relation to their viability.

We need to look at the big picture. The global aluminium business has been transformed in recent years, and this is now affecting the energy market in Australia.
