Why Dark City resonates with me.

Dark City. 1h 40min available on Amazon.
1998 rated R. Directed by Alex Proyas.

Starring: Rufus Sewell, William Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland

To get you up to speed, Dark City was a Kafka-esque movie about a man, John Murdoch, who awakens alone in a strange hotel and is wanted for murder.

It is always night. Each time everyone slips into sleep the city gets re-arranged and the buildings move and are re-mapped. John Murdoch needs to re-connect with what will let him escape this repeating dark night city world: Shell Beach. A place with sunshine and ocean views.

I dream that style of dream.

No, not gothic horror. No, not with 'the strangers' with the knives. Nothing scary. More like this stuff. John is riding in a train where it comes to a stop.

He asks what's going on, and they say they're transferring to the train that goes to Shell Beach.

John sees the train approaching. He's home free! Or is he?

You see, it was an express train, doesn't make the stop there. The tantalizing destination blows right by him. Moments later a conductor on the platform tells him that was 'an express' train only.

How does it connect with me?

I'm almost 60. Every night for the last 40 years or so I go into this 'fictitious city' where I have to do something, like drive a car somewhere, or get something in a shop. The city's always familiar to me, but never is something I can tie in with an actual place I've been in.

I've been there so many times, usually doing some kind of errand like delivering a car or passenger. Or renovating a house somewhere in the 'city'. I spent maybe 10 minutes on this sketch, but I bet I could render an evenly more detailed map of the place.

Dark City -without the horror aspects or weird Keifert Sutherland lisping- is what seems to go on in my head almost every night.
