Welcome to your Mead Way newsletter

This newsletter provides key updates on the Mead Way improvement scheme and details of any road closures and diversions which may affect you, your staff or your customers.

Approximately £4m is being invested to increase the capacity of this key road which connects residential areas of North and West Swindon with major employment areas and the town centre. You can read more about the overall plans for the scheme and why it's required here. You'll also find the drawings of the final scheme and some FAQs on this webpage too.

What's recently happened?

Much of the essential work recently on site has happened underground. 

• In the lead up to Christmas, SSE finished diverting the high voltage cable, which previously ran underneath where the new northbound lane will be created. Over the last few weeks SSE has also diverted their low voltage cables too. These cables supply the whole of the Westmead Industrial Estate and surrounding area with electricity. These essential works were preventing our contractor from progressing with large sections of the scheme, but now it is complete this work can now take place.
• Once SSE had diverted its cables, Vodafone also completed its own work on site.
• Meanwhile, our contractor has been building up the sub-base and base layers for the new lane and is preparing to begin surfacing the section from Great Western Way to Westmead Drive. 

What's happening next?

Openreach will be on site this week to reroute thousands of fibreoptic cables, which provide phone lines and internet to the surrounding area.

Once Openreach has completed its work, our contractor will begin building the foundations and start to resurface the stretch of Mead Way from Westmead Drive to Great Western Way, including Stonehill Green.

We expect to reopen the section from Mead roundabout to Westmead roundabout (phase one) in March. Preparatory work for the second phase of the improvement scheme has already begun to help speed up this part of the work.

We do appreciate the frustrations these delays have caused residents, motorists and businesses and we are working hard to get the first phase completed as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.
