The recent release of Thor: Love and Thunder, directed and co-written by filmmaker Taika Waititi, provides a great excuse to dig into his earlier work. If this were October, we might have picked his inventive vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows — but summertime, which so lends itself to exploring the outdoors, is the perfect time for Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
The movie is about Ricky Baker, a troubled but endearing kid who is adopted through the foster system by Bella and her gruff, stoic husband Hector. When tragedy strikes, Ricky winds up escaping to the wilderness, and after Hector joins him the pair become the subject of a national manhunt.
It is set in Aotearoa/New Zealand, and Waititi places the indigenous Māori people in the foreground of the film. It's a love letter to the local environment and culture, but for Oregonian watchers it brings Oregon's forests to mind.
