Principal’s Comments
I’ve really enjoyed my first two weeks as Principal of Belmont Primary School. It’s been a pleasure connecting with the children—in their classrooms, out in the playground, on road patrol, or even when they yell out to me from the window of their car or across the supermarket aisle!
It’s also been wonderful to see so many parents and grandparents around the school—dropping off and picking up children, helping out on trips, or coaching and managing sports teams. Your support is truly appreciated.
Our staff have been working hard to create another fantastic term of learning. Our junior students are excited about their upcoming visit to the Devonport Recycling Centre as part of their Loose Parts Technology topic. The middle team is diving into a unit on animals and looking forward to an upcoming trip to the zoo. Meanwhile, our senior students are exploring some fascinating aspects of New Zealand history.
I’d like to acknowledge Mrs. Ali Levitt, who is stepping into the role of Deputy Principal. Ali has an incredible heart for this school and community. She is a tireless worker, and I feel very fortunate to have her by my side.
This term, we’re launching several new fundraising initiatives—some to support our school and learning opportunities, and others to give back and support important causes. I’m excited to announce that on Friday, 30th May, we’ll be holding the very first Belmont Primary Obstacle Dash! Children will be challenged to complete an obstacle course set up around the school field, filled with fun and engaging activities. Students will seek online sponsorship to take part and raise funds for their school. Look out for more information coming home soon!
We’re committed to continually improving our school environment. With this in mind, the Board and staff have been discussing options for the direction of any additional funds that may be raised. Our leading idea is to cover one of our current court areas and create an all-weather space for classes, sports teams, outdoor play and community use. This is a significant project that may take several years to complete, but it will be a valuable asset to the school.
Later in the term, Miss Hannah Powell has organised our participation in Jumping June. Children will work on their jump rope skills, stay healthy and active, and raise money for the Heart Foundation—a great cause.
Please note: School will be closed for students on Monday, 23rd June, while we hold our mid-year parent/teacher interviews. This is an important opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and achievements.
A warm welcome to all the new students who have joined us this term—I’m confident you’ll love your time at Belmont Primary.
Last week, I had the opportunity to share with staff the presentation I gave during the Principal appointment process. I’d like to end this newsletter by sharing my vision statement from that presentation with you as well:
“I will build upon the strong foundation of this school, further cultivating a culture of inclusivity, collaboration, and joy. I will strive for this school to provide an exceptional education for every student and to be a place of belonging and connection for our community for generations to come.”
Ngā manaakitanga,
Peter Thorne
