This year is an election year and the high turn-out of voters, in person and by proxy, was very encouraging for the future of IAF.

H.E Majed Al Mansouri, candidate for the position of IAF President, was unable to attend in person, due to pressing family matters. He filmed this address in the IAF Brussels Office a few days before the meeting.

The Young Falconers Group of IAF, led by Andrea Villa from Milan, has produced an excellent video of how the element is being preserved. The UNESCO  Lists of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Mankind encourage us to pass on our element to future generations, from past generations.

This marvelous video shows its importance and collects portraits of young falconers from all around the word , especially all the 89 nations that are part of our association and were called to give their contributions.

World Falconry Day 16th November

Dear Falconers, Associations, and all people associated with Falconry,

This November 16th we celebrate the sixth edition of "World Falconry Day". On this occasion we invite you to celebrate with the slogan: "Women Falconers … Wings for Falconry!"

With the 2018 slogan of World Falconry Day we want to value both the historic and the current contribution of women falconers.

The activities of the WFD mainly take place in the week that includes November 16th, the anniversary of falconry recognition by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

All Individuals, clubs and organizations are welcome (irrespective of membership of the IAF). The only important consideration is that the activity should be designed to develop a good image of falconry at local and global level.

You can download the logo at www.iaf.org If you wish, your activity can be part of the official program of the IAF and subsequently be disseminated internationally. To arrange this, you have to send your proposal to wfd@iaf.org . The members of the IAF WFD working group will evaluate proposals. All selected Activities will be registered on the website of the IAF and can then use the logo of the IAF.

Thank you for helping by sharing this letter to where-ever and who-ever you consider appropriate. You can find updated information both on www.iaf.org and Facebook

Also you can find information about the IAF Women’s Working Group on its Facebook page

Germany: Action Program Insect Protection of the Federal Ministry for the Environment

On 10.10.2018 the Federal Ministry for the Environment in Berlin presented their program for insect protection. The DFO was present. To make it short: a very ambitious program, if it can skip the other political hurdles of the Bundestag.

Minister Ms Svenja Schulze said, it is now necessary to use the window of public perception on the insect decline to get the right things off the ground and asked for the online survey (https://dialog.bmu.de) Not only to provide the BMU with further ideas, but also to actively support this program.

More than 70% of the insect masses have been lost and significantly more species are extinct. The main causes have been changes in agriculture: loss of habitats, the increased use of synthetic pesticides, as well as the massive input of nitrogen oxides into the landscape leading to plant depletion, as each type of insect is dependent on certain plant species. This loss of insects leads directly to the loss of dependent species, like the partridge and pheasant, which depend on this animal protein in their first weeks of life.

These relationships are the biggest threat to us, because no game equals no falconry.

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research regards the decline in species as serious a problem for humanity as is climate change.

A heartfelt plea:

So please, please, and this is my personal call, participate, participate in this public participation, to make it clear that we are really serious about this issue. If not us, then who?

But now to the program in detail. The following topics are addressed:

  1. Promote insect habitats in the agricultural landscape.
  2. Restore and network habitats for insects in other landscape areas.
  3. Strengthen protected areas as habitats for insects
  4. Reduce the use of pesticides
  5. Reduce inputs of nutrients and pollutants into soils and waters
  6. Reduce light pollution
  7. Deepening research - multiplying knowledge
  8. Improve funding
  9. Promote engagement of the company
