Today's Bible Study Lesson
“A
New City”
Aim:
Explore the
possibility of living in a new place;
Imagine
the richness and serenity of living in New Jerusalem; and Celebrate
God’s provision of new city for believers throughout eternity.
Background:
Revelations 21:9-27
Bible
Lesson:
Revelations
21:9-21
“And
the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of
the twelve apostles of the Lamb.” Revelations 21:14 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
Apostle John is the author of the Gospel According to John and the
New Testament Books of 1, 2, and 3 John and Revelations. John was
one of Jesus twelve disciples and on many occasions he was referred
to as “the disciple that Jesus loved.” While dying on the cross
for the sins of humankind, Jesus assigned the care of His “earthly
mother” to John. John was a member of Jesus’ inner circle of
disciples, Peter, James, and John who were with Jesus at the Mount
of Transfiguration and in the Garden of Gethsemane. John penned
Revelations while imprisoned on the Isle of Patmos for his faith.
“Patmos
is now known internationally as the “Jerusalem of the Aegean,”
or the “Island of the Apocalypse,” because this is where the
Book of Revelation was written by John, who found refuge on the
island in the 1st century AD.” The Precepts for Living Commentary
introduces this lesson as follows: “The Book of Revelations
records four visions of John. The first vision (1:12-3:22) is of
Jesus and His messages to the seven churches. The second vision
(4:1-13:18) depicts Jesus Christ at the Throne of God, opening the
seven seals. The third vision (14:1-16:21) describes Christ on Mount
Zion. Our lesson shares
John’s best description of his
tour of the
New Jerusalem which he experienced
in
his
fourth vision
while in the Spirit on the Isle of Patmos.
- Revelations
21:9-11, Beautiful Bride:
During God’s
revelation
to John, an angel who was one of seven angels who held the seven
last plagues approached John and invited him to come and see a
magnificent site that of the bride who was to be wed to the Lamb of
God. The angel took John in the Spirit to a high mountain which
provided a “bird’s eye view.” What John saw was the Holy
City, Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God. What John saw
was a glorious site that shined like the glory of God and sparkled
like a precious gem, like jasper as clear as crystal. The
New Jerusalem is
the city prepared
the saints of
God.
They are the bride of the Lamb of God soon to be wed to the Lamb.
With the limited vocabulary of humankind, John describes his
experience as best as
he
could for an indescribable experience.
- Revelations
21:12-17, Beautiful Foundations: John
begins to describe in detail the new city. He begins with the city
walls, which are both broad and high with twelve gates each guarded
by
an
angel. Each gate had
inscribed on it the names of the twelve tribes of Israel: Reuben,
Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Gad, Asher, Dan, Naphtali,
Joseph, and Benjamin. There are three gates located on each side of
the city. God’s
selection of the Israelites was for the purpose of demonstrating to
other nations the magnificence and power of the True and Living God.
The intention was for other nation to be drawn to God; however, the
Israelites’ behavior was not always as God had intended. In some
ways, the Israelites were to be ambassadors for their God to bring
other nations to them. Does this remind one of a “gate?” Three
on the east. Three on the north. Three on the south. And three on
the west. The wall of the city had twelve foundation stones on each
was inscribed with
the
names of the
Lord’s twelve
apostles (Matthew, Andrew, John, Philip, Thomas, Simon Peter,
Bartholomew, James, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot,
Judas the son of James, and the apostle born out of due season
Paul). The
apostles were left with the awesome responsibility to share the
Gospel with everyone
they encountered. Does their message of the Gospel to the lost
remind one of a “foundation” for a non-believer to begin a
journey to belief in Jesus Christ?
The angel
used a golden measuring rod to measure the city, its gates, and its
wall. The measurements of its
height, width, and length
were all equal. In
today’s units the
measurements would
be 1,400 miles each. In
other words a cube. The Holy of Holies which was located in the
tabernacle and in the temple that Solomon built for God also was a
cubical area. That is the height, width, and length were the same.
The Ark of the Covenant , which represented the presence of God, was
in the Holy of Holies. At the designated time, once a year a priest
went into the Holy of Holies on behalf of the people and himself. In
the New Jerusalem, the saints will continually be in the presence God
Himself. There seems
to be some similarities to the New Jerusalem and the Holy of Holies.
The measured thickness of the wall was
216 feet.
-
Revelations
21:18-21, Beautiful Walls:
John’s
description of the city walls included
very precious and rare gems including the twelve layers of
the
foundation. These gems included jasper, sapphire, agate, emerald,
onyx, beryl, topaz,
chrysoprase, jacinth, and amethyst. The city was made of pure gold
that was as clear as glass. The gates were made pearls. Each gate
was composed of a single pearl. What enormous pearls! Thus the
expression the pearly gates of heaven. The main street was made of
pure gold that had such a gloss that it appeared to be as clear as
glass. What beautiful,
magnificent,
and
indescribable sights were seen by John while he experienced this
vision “while in the Spirit.”
Take
Aways:
-
Our human vocabulary is too
limited to describe what God has prepared for his saints.
-
Eternal Life is dwelling with
God forever and His dwelling place cannot be adequately described
with the words available to us.
-
God does not lie and Jesus
promised that He will return for His saints to take them to dwell
with Him for Eternity.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“But
as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have
entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for
them that love him.” 1 Co 2:9 KJV
“In
my Father's house are many mansions: if [it were] not [so], I would
have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and
prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto
myself; that where I am, [there] ye may be also.” John
14:2-3 KJV
“Then
shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of
my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation
of the world:” Matthew
25:34 KJV
“Love
not the world, neither the things [that are] in the world. If any man
love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that
[is] in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes,
and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth
the will of God abideth for ever.” 1 John
2:15-17 KJV
“For
if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which
sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by
the word of the Lord, that we which are alive [and] remain unto the
coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the
Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice
of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ
shall rise first: Then we which are alive [and] remain shall be
caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the
air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.” 1 Thessalonians
4:14-17 KJV
