The
Fourth of July—also known as Independence Day or July 4th—has
been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the
tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th
century and the American
Revolution.
On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental
Congress voted
in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13
colonies adopted
the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted
by Thomas
Jefferson.
From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the
birth of American independence, with festivities ranging
from fireworks,
parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues.
The Fourth of July 2021 is on Sunday, July 4, 2021; the federal
holiday will be observed on Monday, July 5, 2021.

Today's Bible Study Lesson
"An Attitude of Gratitude”
Aim: Explore
reasons
only one of ten healed lepers turned back to Jesus in thanksgiving,
Sense
the
need in our lives for increased expressions of gratitude to God,
and Develop
a
plan for showing thanksgiving.
To
God and others on a daily basis.
Background: Leviticus
13-14;
Luke 5:12-16; 17:11-19
Bible Lesson:
Leviticus
13:45-46;
Luke 17:11-19
Memory
Verses:
“And
one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a
loud voice glorified God” Luke
17:15 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
Our
Study this week includes
an
Old Testament passage (Leviticus 13:45-46) which provides some
background
on the restrictions and behavior required by a person identified as
a leper, one
suffering
from leprosy, and a New Testament (Luke 17:11-19) passage describing
Jesus encounter with a group of men suffering from leprosy.
Leviticus
Chapters 13 and 14 provides detailed instructions for the Israelites
in
handling
anyone with an infectious skin disease. Leprosy was a contagious
skin disease, which rendered a person ceremonially unclean requiring
isolation and restrictions from entering the temple to worship or to
live in a
community.
A
priest was the only person who could declare a leper cleansed which
would allow the person to re-enter society and resume the ability to
enter the temple for worship.
-
A
person identified to have leprosy was required to wear ragged
clothes, to appear dis-shuffled, to cover their mouthes, and to
shout “Unclean! Unclean!” when encountering other people. As
long as they possessed the disease, lepers were to live in isolation
outside of the community of others. Consequently, the only
socialization afforded a leper was other lepers.
-
Luke,
the physician’s writings in Chapter 17:11-19, records
Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem while passing in the boundary area
between Samaria and Galilee. He
encounters a group of ten men, who were lepers. The lepers
maintained their required distance, but when they saw Jesus passing
by they cried out “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.”
-
Jesus
response to their plea for mercy was “Go, show yourselves to the
priests.” As they obediently began their journey to be inspected
by the priests, their leprosy began to clear up and progressed to a
total cleansing.
-
One
of the ten cleansed
lepers recognized the miraculous cleansing and
shouted
a praise to God for the cleansing and returned to Jesus and fell at
His feet continually giving thanks. This leper is identified as a
Samaritan. The
Samaritans
were a group of Jews who were not deported by the Assyrians from the
kingdom of Israel and who intermarried with non-Jews who were
imported into Samaria. The Jews and Samaritans did not associate
with each other (e.g.,
Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan women at the well recorded in
John 4:9).
The
disease of leprosy seems to have been a unifying factor among those
sharing such a disease, whether Jew or Samaritan.
-
Jesus
reaction to the lone cleansed
leper was a question “Were not ten cleansed? But where are the
nine?” Jesus points out that this Samaritan, who was classified
as foreigner was the only former leper to give glory to God for a
life changing miracle. Jesus now grants
to the returning cleansed
leper the added blessing of being made well. In other words, not
only did
he receive
physical healing but also spiritual healing because of the
Samaritan’s faith in Jesus.
Take
Aways:
-
There
are
no
limitations to what God can do when one trusts and calls upon Him.
-
A
believer with an attitude of gratitude for God’s Blessings will be
rewarded with even
greater Blessings.
-
The
proper response to God’s Blessings is to express our gratitude for
all of our Blessings, great and small.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Every
good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from
the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of
turning.” James
1:17 KJV
“O
give thanks unto the LORD; for [he is] good; for his mercy [endureth]
for ever.” 1 Chronicles
16:34 KJV
“Enter
into his gates with thanksgiving, [and] into his courts with praise:
be thankful unto him, [and] bless his name.” Psalm
100:4 KJV
“Bless
the LORD, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Who forgives
all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases,” Psalm
103:2-3 NKJV
“For
thou, Lord, [art] good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy
unto all them that call upon thee.” Psalm
86:5 KJV
“For
God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting
life.” John 3:16 KJV

172 New COVID-19 Cases & 6 Deaths Reported in Kentucky for
July 2, 2021
(8 New Cases in Fayette County)
As millions receive the COVID-19 vaccines, it is still important and necessary to continue to practice the CDC and Kentucky Governor's Guidance and Mandates. The distribution and administration of the vaccines to millions of people continues as a high priority for the Biden Administration with July 4th as a milestone objective for families whose members have been fully vaccinated to have small celebration gatherings. Meanwhile we must stay steadfast, vigilant and disciplined in the adherence of safe practices as provided by the CDC and the Kentucky Governor's Health advice in light of the continued spread of the virus. Click CDC VACCINE INFORMATION for some information from the CDC on the COVID-19 vaccines.
- Get a flu vaccination as soon as possible but getting it any time in the flu season is beneficial. VaccineFinderexternal icon to find out where to get vaccinated near you.
- Avoid close contact with those who are sick, maintain at least 6 feet from others who are not from your household,
- Wear face masks when in public (Mandatory in Kentucky and is being extended on a 30 day basis until the spread is under control),
- Wash your hands frequently,
- Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and leave home only when absolutely necessary.
