Bath wins Britain in Bloom 2024 |
|
Out of 52 community gardening group finalists, Bath in Bloom has been crowned Overall Winner at the Britain in Bloom Finals 2024 held at Manchester United’s Old Trafford Stadium. The Somerset group also won the Small City category, achieving a Gold award.
Bath Parks Department has an on-site nursery enabling high-quality plants to be produced with a low transportation footprint. The displays, particularly the hanging baskets on Milsom Street and throughout the main retail areas of Bath, have a real wow factor helping draw in visitors.
Good quality herbaceous planting is evident in The Botanical Gardens in Royal Victoria Park, as well as in Manvers Street car park, and eye-catching planting turns heads in Parade Gardens (pictured).
Bath in Bloom engages with communities across the city. There are many ongoing projects with local schools including dipping ponds, planting trees, and creating willow art. One school has grown its own wheat, prepared the grain, milled their own flour, and then baked bread.
Darren Share, Chair of Judges said: “Britain in Bloom and Bath have been connected right from the start with both celebrating their 60th anniversary in 2024. It was clear that everyone in Bath knew about Britain in Bloom and wanted to shout about how proud they were to be a part of Bath in Bloom. Well done to all involved”

WEEKEND RECIPES | TRICK OR TREAT

Words by Melissa Blease
Pumpkin Muffins
Don't discard the pumpkin flesh from those spooky Halloween lanterns! These pumpkin muffins are a far-from-ghoulish halloween treat.
Ingredients (makes 12 muffins) 500g pumpkin flesh, chopped into chunks 225g self-raising flour 100g caster sugar 50g soft light brown sugar (plus a couple of tbsp more, for roasting the pumpkin) 125g melted butter (plus a couple of tbsp more, for roasting the pumpkin) 2 eggs
Method
Tumble the chopped pumpkin flesh into a roasting tin, drizzle with around 2 tbsp melted butter, sprinkle with a little bit of soft brown sugar and roast for around 45 minutes or until very tender, turning the chunks over halfway through the cooking time. Allow to cool completely before tipping into a food processor and blending to form a smooth pumpkin purée.
Preheat the oven to 190ºC/gas mark 5 and line a 12-hole muffin tin with muffin cases. In a large bowl, combine the flour, caster sugar, soft brown sugar and cinnamon together. In a separate bowl or jug, whisk the pumpkin purée with the eggs and the melted butter and add to the dry ingredients.
Stir the mixture until just combined and divide between the muffin cases. Bake the muffins for 18-20 minutes or until golden and risen and a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Allow to cool on wire rack before gobbling up, or keep for up to three days in an airtight container.

WEEKEND WINES | ORANGE YOU HAPPY?
|
|
|
|
Orange Wines at The Great Wine Co.
Orange wine has grown drastically in popularity in recent years, but what exactly makes an orange wine orange? Orange wine, also known as skin contact white wine, is made in a similar way to red. White grapes are fermented together with their skins and seeds, then left in contact with the juice for a period of between one day to many months. This creates a wine with an orange hue resulting in lots of complexity, tannin, and increased levels of dryness and texture – more substantial than a white wine and capable of taking on bigger flavours.
Ulterior Naranja Orange Organic, Bodegas Verum 2022 | £19.95 Back To Silence Orange Wine, Lugana, Azienda Agricola Ottella 2022 | £42 Orange Wine Albariño, Bodegas Martin Codax 2022 | £22 Orange Inzolia Organic, Tenute Orestiadi 2023 | £16.65

MAGAZINE KIOSK | MAGALLERIA

|
|
Curated by Daniel McCabe
PAPERBOY feels aimed at and made by someone with a creative eye who observes what others miss, often things that look like something else or something that makes you laugh, inspires you perhaps, or just asks a question that invites deeper contemplation. The magazine has noticed a trend in contemporary language where people now substitute the word ‘human’ for ‘man’, ‘woman’ and other regular descriptions (as in someone is a ‘beautiful human’ or ‘spectacular human’) and believes this is an inevitable reaction to the dehumanising, impersonal effects of technology. It argues that our own intelligence is not artificial, it’s 100 per cent human. Issue #6 features a range of very capable writers, photographers and artists who celebrate humanity with 148 pages of only good news, made in the real world with our own imperfect, human hands | £20
