Hello
Welcome to the Christmas edition of the Independent Living newsletter. I write 51 of these every year, so as this is the last one of 2017, I thought I would take the opportunity to diverge a bit from the normal pattern!

Perhaps not surprisingly, when I write about disability and carer benefits, there is always a lot of reaction from readers, often sharing shocking accounts of their experiences with the system. So one bright spot for the end of the year: the invidious DWP target of maintaining 80% of original benefit decisions on appeal, irrespective of merit, has gone.

The effect of reassessment on Motability vehicles has also rumbled on through the year, as research shows nearly half of people having their disability benefit removed completely or reduced when transferred from DLA to PIP.

Care Act advice and guidance is another hot topic – getting assessed, what is a reasonable care package, how to get NHS continuing care.

Independent Living FAQs

Safe manual handling; using hoists – everything concerned with patient transfers comes up frequently.

What do you want for 2018?

I'm sure your letter to Santa is already written (in your head, at least!) but setting aside what you are hoping to find under the Christmas tree next week, is there anything special you would like from Independent Living next year?

I can't promise a sports car, Caribbean holiday, or designer handbag, but is there anything you would like me to write about in 2018? Anything you want more of, or less of, in the newsletter?

Tell me your wishes, and I will do my best to make them come true!

And finally...

Earlier this year, I wrote a short piece for Nuance, who supply DragonDictate, the dictation software I use for my work on Independent Living.

It has just been published on their website, so if you are curious about how this particular partnership started, you can read more by clicking the link below!

There are various ways you can get in touch with us: email me; visit our Facebook page and leave a message there; or if it's short and sweet, Tweet!

Previous newsletters are archived here.

If you are reading a copy of the Independent Living newsletter that has been passed on to you by a colleague or friend, why not sign up for your own free subscription – it's quick and easy, and won't lead to your inbox being bombarded with other stuff!
