Why should I care? The film, which stars Carol Kane and Jason Schwartzman, premiered in the US Dramatic Competition at Sundance this year, where it picked up a nomination for the Grand Jury Prize. It also screened at Berlin, Tribeca and Champs-Élysées. Critics reviews were positive with a lot of the reviews praising the chemistry between Kane and Schwartzman.

What's the story? A cantor in a crisis of faith finds his world turned upside down when his grade school music teacher reenters his life as his new adult bat mitzvah student.

Anything notable? The film was directed and co-written by Nathan Silver, who has released eight consecutive films in as many years. He's an indie filmmaker out of New York City who is best known for his films Thirst Street, The Great Pretender and the TV series Cutting My Mother.

Why should I care? The film made the shortlist for Spain's submission to the 96th Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film and received numerous accolades during it's festival run. It premiered at Cannes in 2023, then made it to the "Centrepiece" program at Toronto before going on to Busan, London and New York.

What's it about? Julio Arenas, a famous actor, disappears during the filming of a movie. Although his body is never found, the police conclude that he has suffered an accident at the seaside. Years later, this kind of mystery comes back to the news.

Anything else notable? The film is directed and co-written by Victor Erice. It's the first full-length film from Erice since his 1002 documentary, The Quince Tree Sun. That film won the Jury Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes that year.

Strange Darling

Why should I care? This thriller from JT Mollner premiered last year at Fantastic Fest to critical acclaim. Reviews have been extremely positive with most praising the film for its clever construction and outstanding performances. Variety says, "it feels destined to become a cult classic that grows more satisfying with each successive viewing".

What's it about? Nothing is what it seems when a twisted one-night stand spirals into a serial killer's vicious murder spree.

Anything else notable? The film boasts and impressive cast, starring Willa Fitzgerald, Kyle Gallner, Barbara Hershey and Ed Begley Jr. It also features Giovanni Ribisi, Jason Patric and others in supporting roles.

Festival Film of the Week

Good One

The 10th Annual Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival takes place August 21 - 25 this year in Middlebury, Vermont. The festival is unique in that it celebrates dynamic 1st and 2nd time filmmakers from around the world.

Good One is the directorial debut from India Donaldson and it had its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year. So far its festival run has been quite successful, having picked up two wins and 4 nominations.

Synopsis: During a weekend backpacking trip in the Catskills, 17-year-old Sam navigates the clash of egos between her father and his oldest friend.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a French historical romantic drama that came out in 2019 and is now available on Hulu. The film received wide critical acclaim, being nominated for Independent Spirit Awards, Critics' Choice Awards, a Golden Globe and more.

The film was voted the 30th greatest film of all time in the Sight & Sound 2022 critics' poll and has also been considered to be one of the best films of 2019, if not of all time.

Synopsis: France, 1770. Marianne, a painter, is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. Héloïse is a reluctant bride to be and Marianne must paint her without her knowing. She observes her by day, to paint her secretly.
